Freshman Academy -- Wiki and Blog Help

General Section

To start all new accounts are automatically registered as a wiki user when created. Your login name for wiki will be in the form of a special wiki word, which, by default, is your first and last name without a space in between (ex. Joseph Smith will be JosephSmith?.) You can get to the wiki main page by opening a web browser and typing in the address: http://www.wou.edu/wiki, or by clicking here. -- RickThompson - 14 Jul 2005

-- a GettingStarted page seems like a good place to start....

The Benefits of using Wiki

We should also think about presenting this to the freshman in a manner in which they will WANT to use it, not just that the HAVE to use it. Such things would be as to how they can pin class help on certain wiki pages, or information about the campus. -- ChristianMendez - 15 Jul 2005

The Writing Center staff shall review each summary for clarity, organization and the quality of the content. The Staff, assisted by Center Fellows, will provide feedback to each team about the quality of the written product. At the end of the year, the top twenty teams will be invited to enter their submissions into a writing competition for various awards, including a $10,000.00 scholarship for the top team.

Why Wiki for WOU is good for you!

(Perhaps something like this?) The wiki is quickly becoming one of the most popular information tools around the world. Wikipedia, a wiki encyclopedia is one of the 100 most browsed sites on the internet (I don't remember ho, hosting over 600,000 user made articles in the English version alone. For our purposes, the (What is it's name? WouWiki?? WikiWou?? Wiki for Wou? Wiki4Wou? I know the first two will show up as WikiWords, but I think they are the best names and need to be shown in that form.) can be used for (main objective and subordinate objectives). -- KentoIkeda - 15 Jul 2005

When Editing

When you edit a document, look below the edit box for basic formatting help. You can use the preview button to test your formatting changes without saving; use the back button in your browser to return from the preview screen to the edit screen.

When you are done, make sure the "Release Edit Lock" button is checked (it probably is already) and then hit Save. If you have unchecked the Release Edit Lock button, the topic will remain locked for an hour. Note that if you have a topic open for editing but don't do anything for an hour, the system will assume you have abandoned your edits and allow others to come in and edit the topic.

Add other stuff here, this is just a start... -- RonSwartzer - 14 Jul 2005

Only one person is allowed to edit a document at a time. The name of the person that is currently editing will pop up when you click the Edit button. There is no time limit for them to be on, so when working in a large group it is a good idea to write all of your thoughts down in a Word document before transferring it to the Wiki server. Then copy and paste your work into the Wiki edit window. Also make sure that you press the Save button when you are done, otherwise there may be people sitting and waiting until you are done.

Also remember there is no spell check so this will also help out with spelling errors.

Adding Images

Placing an image on your wiki page can be done two different ways.

1. If the image you would like to use is on the web simply type its URL into your edit page at the point you would like the image to appear. To find an Image’s URL, right click on it and go down to properties. The URL will appear in the “location” field.

2. If the image you would like to use is on your computer you can use the “Attach” function found at the top of your page next to “edit.” Once you have clicked “Attach”, you can browse your hard drive for the desired file. After you have selected the image you can decide either to have the image appear in the body of your page or as a link in the list of attachments at the bottom of your page.

Additional Resources

  • Lab Attendants in APSC 101 are becoming wiki experts and can help answer any questions you may have.
  • http://twiki.org is the home page of our version of wiki. It has some great resources for learing how to utilize wiki.
  • At the bottom of the edit page there is a link that says More formatting help. It shows you the code used when writing a Wiki page.

This section will be for issues that an administrator will need be or should be contacted. It is sorted in alphabetical order.

Groups

  • If you need to be added to a group please send your name, WOU E-mail address, the group name, and any other pertinent information to twikiadmin@wou.edu.

Rolled Back

  • If someone has edited your page improperly or defaced your page, you may want to have a "Rolled Back" to a earlier version. This will allow your work to be reset to a different version as when the information was how you wanted it to be. In order for this to happen you need to contact twikiadmin@wou.edu. You will need to include the following:
    • Your Name
    • Your WOU Email address
    • The address of the page that you need rolled back i.e. "http://sundown.wou.edu:85/twiki/bin/view/Academic/AdvancedWikiHints"
    • The revision number that you would like the page to be.
    • Please keep in mind that once a page has been "Rolled Back" there is no way to go to a newer version of the page.

Maybe this should include everything relating to admin contact. like join a group, roll back, etc. But it maybe confusing if this is the only page to get that information.

Miscellaneous hints that probably don't need to be in the basic help file:

  • You can look at the previous versions of topic pages by clicking the links at the bottom that look like 1.2 > 1.1, etc. Each number represents a specific version of the topic; clicking the arrow between two versions will show you a detailed view of the differences between the two. You will see what has been added, changed, and/or deleted.

  • If you want to be notified of changes, go to the main page of a web (i.e. the Academic home page, Main home page, etc.) and click ont he WebNotify topic. Edit that topic and add your name to the list of people to be notified. (Oops, that isn't working yet... trying to debug it.)

  • To save changes to a topic without alerting anyone who has asked to be notified, use the QuietSave button or check the box that says "Minor changes, don't notify". This is intended only for when you make tiny edits, such as typo fixes, that don't significantly change the content of the topic page.

  • I'm still trying to figure out what the Checkpoint button does. I know it saves the page but returns you to the edit window and keeps the topic locked. I can't tell if that is all, though. I'm not sure what good it does, either.

Personal Growth Statement Alex Nalivaiko
My first two years in high school I was a student that had poor grades; I had the grades to participate in sports, just barely. It wasn’t until my final two years in high school that I focused on my studies to raise my grades. My high school didn’t care about the average student, to receive any sort of attention you had to either be a poor student or an excellent student. The change in my academic performance was due to a coach believing in my and motivating me to work on my grades. I’m taking the minimum of 12 credits right now; adjusting, learning how college works, getting to know the people here, that sort of stuff. I don’t know what I want to major in or what I want to do for a living. I took a block schedule that some lady said would help me in most career fields so that’s what I did. I would like to become involved with either football or baseball next year but, this year I really want to focus on getting a good start with my grades. I don’t want to fall into the same situation I did in early high school where my grades almost held me even going to college.

Classroom Experiences and Coursework
This week I spent a lot of time focusing on my Earth Science class. The class received news that our final lab test was in two weeks and would of course cover all the material we have discussed in lab. I have been struggling with the rock identification section of our lab, similar to my fellow classmates. The professor informed us that we can schedule a time to come in a practice identifying rock samples.

Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement
I went home early on Thursday to spend some time with friends of mine from high school and my mom. My friends and I went out for dinner at the Olive Garden and watched some movies. My mom took me out for pizza at Round Table and ordered me my favorite King Arthur Supreme. Sunday evening I returned to participate in an online gaming scrimmage.

Classroom Experiences and Coursework
This week I had my first major assignment for the second half of this term in my Intro to Social Sciences class. It was an essay written to “Critique Capitalism”. I explained how I thought Capitalism, though not great is the best governing system in my opinion. I found out the one day I decided to miss my health and fitness class, we had a major in class assignment. I am behind in most of my classes and I’m struggling to get back into shape.

Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement
I went to a civil war party and Oregon State University and watched the Beavers get beat by the Ducks. I left early because it was a depressing setting down at Oregon State and came back here and spent some time with my friends. We played some video games and talked about how upset we were with the Beavers. On Sunday I played in another online gaming match.

Personal Growth Statement

After being at Western for only two months I am still getting use to it and learning new things. Everyone is very friendly and I have had fun meeting new people in my classes. I enjoy the classroom style better than high school even though you really have to be motivated in college since the teachers don’t care as much as they did in high school. I enjoy watching the usual shows, like Laguna beach and real world, with my friends. My homework load hasn’t been too bad, but I am starting to learn that procrastination can be very stressful and make things harder than they would be if I just worked on it a day at a time. I enjoy my classes and all my teachers. All of them are very nice and helpful, which helps making the transition a little easier. I am realizing how different college is from high school and that you really need to be motivated to succeed in college. I think as long as I stay focused and keep my priorities in line I will do fine in college. I am looking forward to finishing my year at Western Oregon and I am hoping by the time this year is done I will know what I would like to do with the rest of my life. After that I will decide whether I will stay here or go somewhere else to finish off my college career. I am hoping to grow more outgoing and meet lots of new friends.

Alison Theurer Freshman Academy Team 46 Weekly Reflection-5

A: 1) This term I haven’t had to do a lot of internet research, the only time is for my writing class we have to find an article and write about it. I always use articles I have found online, it makes it easier so I don’t have to search through the paper for something that interests me. 2) Some major benefits of using the internet for research is that you can find many websites on the same or related topics, it’s easy to use, and you can always find what you are looking for. Some problems with using the internet are that you never know whether the information you’re using is true because anyone can create a website and pretend like they know what they’re talking about. Another problem could be that some websites don’t go into as much detail as an encyclopedia or a book would.

B: 1) Yes, I have used the internet for personal research before. I have looked up concert tickets and seating, and recipes. 2) Yes, I have always had the internet in my house.

-- AlisonTheurer - 29 Nov 2005

Alison Theurer Freshman Academy Team 46 Weekly Reflection-6

Usually the topics I am interested in are easily researched and I can find a lot of information about it that is useful. Sometimes I just have a hard time finding a good website that has the information about my topic that I want. I looked at animal testing because I believe it is cruel and wrong. I found over 10 pages of websites about this topic that cover both pro testing and against testing. I learned about each side and why they think the way they do. I always like using the internet for research because I can find a lot more information quicker than if I went to the library and had to find all the books.

-- AlisonTheurer - 29 Nov 2005

Alison Theurer Freshman Academy Team 46 Weekly Reflection-7

A) In my writing class this week we started a new paper on reviewing something that interests us. I chose red robin and I think I did pretty good. Not much has been going on in my classes. I am hoping that I am doing good since we haven’t gotten our grades back yet. I am worried about finals a little, but I think if I study enough I will do fine hopefully.

B) This weekend I went home and hung out with my friends and family. I went and saw the movie Jarhead, it was a really good movie. My weekend really wasn’t very exciting. I basically just sat around and hung out with my friends.

-- AlisonTheurer - 29 Nov 2005

Alison Theurer Freshman Academy Team 46 Weekly Reflection-8

A) This week in writing we got our review papers back, I did pretty well. We started talking about our final which is revising one of our other 3 papers. I don’t think it will be too hard. In my biology lab class we started a project awhile ago that will be due this coming week. I am a little stressed out about that because we had to switch groups last week which means we have less time to work in a group than any other group. I am hoping we can still do good even though we are running out of time.

B) I went home this weekend for Thanksgiving Day. I was a lot of fun going home and seeing my family. I ate a lot of really good food and saw some people I haven’t seen in awhile since school started. I watched some Christmas movies to get in the spirit of Christmas, which was a lot of fun. I am excited for the term to almost be over and to start some new classes which will be exciting.

I tend to procrastinate when it comes to doing my homework. Don’t get me wrong, I do my homework right away when I get home, but when it comes to papers and that kind of homework, I put it off. I have a tendency work better under pressure. Working under pressure gives me a thrill of knowing that a paper is due tomorrow, or this project was due today, but I have an extra day to work on it because we didn’t get to me in class. When I came to college, getting my homework done right away didn’t seem quite the right thing to do. I have many more distractions in my dorm room and hall than I did at home. Someone is always walking by, or they will come and talk to me. Its not like high school where I would retreat to my room until my homework is done. I get it all done; it just may be late at night when I finally finish it. In the class room, it is a little different. When I am in the classroom, I take notes and listen and I hate it when someone is talking next to me and I am trying to listen. I have a hearing loss and when there are some background noises, it is hard for me to listen because that is all I hear. That is why I get a seat up in front, so I can hear. When I am in class, I take good notes and when I get back, I rewrite them so they are neat. If my notes aren’t in the way that I like them to be, I will rewrite them because I like organization and neatness. That is something else that is good about me, as a student, I am organized. I can find all my notes and papers. I am a big neat freak, but being a neat freak doesn’t keep me from having a social life. Most of the time, I do like retreating back to my room to have some “me” time, but there are other times where I like to go out and have some fun. I love to go to clubs and meet new people. In high school, I was a part of many activities such as sports; I was on yearbook and participated in the spring musical. I wasn’t in the musical, but I did costuming. That was a lot of fun. I got closer to my friends and I met new people. I won’t do something because someone told me to do it with them; I need to do have an interest in it myself.

When I am in school, I have a hard time getting all of the information into my head and having it stick in there. When I learn something, I learn it, but the second that we go into something else, the information just slips out and waits for the new information. That is why I don’t do well on tests. In general I do well in school, but when it comes to tests like that ACT and the SATs, I don’t do that well on them. That is a challenge for me, not remembering what I am reading or learning. I love science and all that is has to offer. I love studying the past, present and future. Math is a challenge for me, but science math I can do. I don’t know why I am like that. Usually people are good at both, but for me it is science. I am a very loud person once you get to know me, but when I first meet people I am shy. That is why I normally join a club or something of the sort with a friend, that way I can be myself.

I would love to get myself back into the habit of getting my homework done right away, that way I can hang out with my friends at night, talk to my boyfriend who goes to a different college than I do and go to the clubs that I want without worrying that I wont get my homework done on time. I would also like to get into the habit of taking notes when I read. I like to underline the important facts, but I never write them down.

Some of the steps that I can take are, getting back to my room and doing the homework. When someone comes to talk to me, I can tell them that I need to get my homework done and I will talk to them when I am done. I won’t start up my AIM or other instant messages because I like to talk to my friends that go to a different college than me. Keeping up with them is important to me, so I will just have to talk to them when my homework is done. They are just going to have to deal with it.

-- AshleyBell - 11 Oct 2005

The class that was most memorable this week was my Earth Science midterm. I studied for it as much as I could, but in the end, the result wasn’t what I wanted it to be. It’s frustrating to study for something and then get the result back and it’s not what you want it to be. I guess I will just have to study even harder and longer next time. Maybe I need to change my study habits, because they didn’t seem to work. I just don’t know how to go about that, but I know I will figure something out before my next midterm.

Activities: • Halloween Dance

This week I went to the Halloween Dance. It was a lot of fun. I had fun getting ready before hand with my friends in my hall. When we got to the dance, we went through a little haunted maze to get into the dance. Once we were inside, we all just danced together and had a lot of fun. My friends and I stayed up a little bit more afterwards, because we didn’t have an early class.

-- AshleyBell - 02 Nov 2005

My most memorable class this last week was my Earth Science lab. We were talking about earthquakes, what causes them and how much then can destroy. My professor started talking about his experiences and then I thought I should share mine and when I did, I started talking to him more about our experiences and it was cool that someone loves science as much as I do. I love talking about my experiences and thoughts about science and when I find someone that does, I like to take that advantage and share as much as I can. My story was in 2001, we had an earthquake in Washington and when it happened I was in science class talking about earthquakes. It was quite funny.

Activities: • Harry Potter Club

This week, was my Harry Potter Club meeting. It was a good one because we talked about the float that we are going to make, crafts night, and what we are going to do for the kids in the library in town. We decided on a lot of great things to make and do with the kids, I think they are going to have a great time. It was also game night, so we played the new Harry Potter SceneIt?. It was so much fun. I tied with another guy in the club and the tie breaker as to flip a coin best 2 out of 3. I won. It was so much fun.

-- AshleyBell - 08 Nov 2005

My favorite class this week was my computer applications class. We started PowerPoint? this week and I love PowerPoint?. I have only used it a couple of times throughout my high school career, but now that I have started it again, learning how to do everything, it is a lot of fun. It is real practical too, because you can do many things with it. It is a good way of pitching ideas and presentations to a company because it is a visual aid and it has a note capability on it, so you can take notes as you are creating your presentation.

1. So far this term I have looked up journals for my Archaeology paper that I am going to write here in a couple of days. I have gone to Google to find some journals, and also Western Oregon University’s library online. I have found what I need to write my paper. 2. The major benefits of online research are that you can find almost everything that you need. In high school, I had to write a Critical Research Paper, for my history class and I found a major piece of my paper right on Google. You can get to so many archives and sites by using online research. To me, I don’t think there is anything wrong with online research. For me, it’s at home and I don’t have to go to the library which to me is limited. I know many of the items on Google and other research site are wrong, but if you go to the right ones, then it is all good.

Activities: • Online Survey • Boyfriend coming down from WSU to visit • WOU vs. UPS football game

This week, my boyfriend Blake, goes to Washington State University came down to visit me for Veteran’s Day weekend! I was so excited. I haven’t seen him in so long. While he was here, I showed him around and went to the WOU football game. It’s nothing like WSU COUGS football game, but it was football. Unfortunately UPS lost, which is our home town, but it was a victory for WOU (Go Wolves). He left today, Sunday to go back to WSU. It was so good seeing him. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving. 1. I have used the internet research for my personal use. I do it about almost everyday. Most of the time I am just bored and I need something to look up, so I will look up who is in town for concerts, or movies that just came out. I got my ticket for the midnight showing of Harry Potter online, at Fandango. I have also gotten concert tickets online. 2. I did grow up with the internet in my home. My mother uses it all the time at home for everything. She used it to get my used car and she also orders almost everything from online. I got it from her basically.

This week’s most memorable class was my Archaeology class. We went more in depth to what happened to Anastasia and her long lost family. They found her family’s bones but couldn’t uncover them until the Fall of the Soviet Union. That is when they found out that Anastasia and her brother Alexis were missing. Many people believe that a woman named Anna. Others believe that Anna isn’t the missing Romanov daughter. They believe that Anastasia and her brother were set a fire and burned to death. It was really interesting to finally see what really happened to the family.

Activities:
Harry Potter Movie – Midnight Showing

This week I went to the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I went with the Harry Potter club. We all got there early so we could get good seats. It was a lot of fun standing in line waiting for the movie to start. I was so excited; I was acting like a five year old child. It felt good to be a kid again! Every once in a while you need to let your inner child out.

The topics that I am interested are easily researched because I know how to research them. I know all the good sites that get you want you need. For my Critical Research Paper that I did my junior year, I was able to prove my thesis because I was able to find what I needed. I knew how, so I did it. For this topic I researched something a little silly, but it is my favorite show, FRIENDS. I was able to find every episode and their scripts along with everything you need to know about all the actors and actresses. They are David Schwimmer, Courtney Cox-Arquette, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow and Matthew LeBlanc?. There is nothing I don’t know about FRIENDS and researching topics on the internet.

Amanda Brock 10/13/05 Personal and Professional Growth Statement

In high school I didn’t do as well academically as I could have. The role of student isn’t an easy one for me to fill. I spent a lot of my life teaching my self and sometimes instruction is hard to take. However I love to learn new things and as a result I love new classes and challenges. My senior year I was very involved in many clubs and sports teams, I was in GSA, coached softball, did swim team as well as many other activities. My strengths as a student would be my organizational skills, I keep a detailed planner of assignments, due dates, test, ect. My weakness would be motivation. I find my self getting frustrated and fighting off due dates. My learning strength would be that I love to learn. However, I don’t take criticism well. With extra curricular activities I tend to be very involved, at times I can be over involved and take on too much. By the end of fall term I would like to find motivation and a routine for doing my homework. I would also like to work on taking criticism and growing from it. The steps that could assist me in making this transition would be to not only have a schedule but to follow it 100% of the time. Another helpful thing would be when receiving criticism not to take it personally and to remember that this will improve my work.

Weekly Reflections 10/10 – 10/16

In the last week I have had many classroom experiences. The experience that I would find as the most memorable would be learning how to perform “Gathering the Pezcods.” In this class a group of college students spent one hour on a Thursday morning holding hands and prancing in circles. Dancing is a wonderful way to get comfortable around people you’ve never met. Most of those present were doing something that they had no previous experience with and many just looked foolish doing it. It was a wonderful and memorable experience.

I participated in national Coming Out Day. I found this experience to be significant because it was my first college event with Triangle Alliance. I helped out at a booth and got the opportunity to observe the older members of the club interact with the public. It gave me the chance to get to know the leaders while they were leading. There was also a panel discussion around Coming Out Day for individual members to express their views and experiences. I really enjoyed hearing from these people as individuals and seeing them at work in the public eye.

A Lil' Bit ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Amanda Oviatt. This is my third year here at Western. I have switched my major seriously about 4 times! I love to read and write, and I was majoring in English and minoring in writing, until recently I decided teaching is what I am meant to do. I started teaching a Sunday school class at my church and that is when I changed my major to Early Elementary Education. I love lil' kids with a passion! My goal and dream is to finish school, and then begin teaching anywhere from pre-school through grade 4. I am new to the writing center, but so far I have enjoyed every second of it. I was recommended by one of my professor's to be a "FELLOW," and I'm so glad she did because so far I'm having a blast! I also am a PLTL(Peer lead team leader) for Bio 101. I am having such a great time getting to know new people, and simply knowing I am helping someone achieve their goals and become a stronger student is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

My contact info

I am looking forward to getting to know my group members! I am always willing to help anyone out who is having any problems or has any questions. MY # is:(503)984-1379. If you have any questions or concerns at all, please feel free to give me a call. I will try my best to help you in every way I can.

Governments Pressing Roche For more of Its Anti-Flu Drug

About:

Roche is a company that produces a medication called Tamiflu. In past years Tamiflu has treated the common flu. Last year Roche grossed one hundred and ten million francs. However because of the potential pandemic, bird flu they have almost tripled their gross this year, earning roughly one point two billion francs.

Roche is overwhelmed with the amount of Tamiflu needed, and at this time are unable to produce it all. The government thought that it would be wise of Roche to let other companies produce the medication for the immediate need. Roche does not believe this to be as great of an idea. They think that the companies would use it to profit themselves, and not to aid the population. This makes Roche hesitant in making any further decisions about expanding the production of Tamiflu, yet.

Thoughts:

I believe that Roche should allow companies to make Tamiflu, as well as genetic companies to produce it for a cheaper cost. If the bird flu is going to become a pandemic outbreak I find it necessary, and immorally wrong if they don’t comply. I also would think that the government would monitor these specific companies to make sure they are contributing to this dire need, not for their own benefit. Other company’s production of this medicine would only last as long as the need for Tamiflu.

There are always two sides to the story and now I will go over the scenario from Roche’s point of view. They feel that companies would not be able to make Tamiflu appropriately. They state that is an extremely difficult medication to make, that it has a complex production process. Tamiflu is also not being used right off the shelf, and going to those in need. Roche says that people are preparing so they are stockpiling the drug. Roche believes that making more would not go directly to those who actually need the product. Both of these points make sense to me. The article said that Paris is entirely sold out of Tamiflu, because of the possible pandemic. So it is obvious these drug are for the time being, not going to infected people. I am also able to understand the high risk in company’s producing the medication inappropriately. Tampered medicine could lead to an entire separate pandemic.

Mammograms Found to Lower Breast Cancer Death Rate

About:

From 1985 to 2000 the Breast Cancer death rate dramatically decreased. This article discusses scientists testing between modern medications and mammograms. Some scientists believe that powerful new drugs are the sol reason for the decrease in the death rate. However many others believe that it is mammograms, and its ability to show cancer signs early. In 1985 there were only twenty percent of woman that were receiving mammograms annually. Now twenty years later the amount of woman getting annuals has increased to seventy percent.

Although mammograms are especially important to potential cancer patients, they can also be an inconvenience to many others. This is because of the ninety percent of false positives that mammogram patients get. Another problem concerning mammograms are its lack of specific information. It can determine if there is an irregular growth, but not how potentially harmful it is. Woman can be treated for cancer and then find out that it wasn’t serious enough to remove it. Mammograms can also cause irritation in the chest area, only making the cancer more severe.

Thoughts:

The scientists that only believe on medication in my opinion are neglecting a very important point. How do you know to take the medicine if you don’t know if you have cancer? Mammograms give woman the ability to find out if they have cancer. Then medications can further assist them. However I don’t believe that mammograms can cure cancer either. Some cancers are incurable no matter what stage you catch it in.

I think that it is to every woman’s advantage to get a mammogram, whether or not it can be cured. If I had a disease as serious as cancer I would want to know, and mammograms are one of the primary ways woman can discover they have breast cancer. Yes, ninety percent of the time women receive false positives. But if it were me, I would rather have a false positive, than a positive negative, or no result at all.

Bird Flu in East Africa Feared

About:

Avian flu (H5N1), better known as the bird flu initially started on Russian and Macedonian farms. It has made its way from South East Asia all the way to the Balkan region affecting other countries along its way. The main fear of the bird flu is where it will strike next. They have predicted it will travel to North Africa and East Africa because of migratory patterns. This would make the outbreak even more widespread because of Africa’s lack of civilization, and close living arrangements with their animals. Birds infected with the disease can be eaten after being properly cooked; however touching the birds uncooked can contaminate a person, some scientists have hypothesized.

Thoughts:

After learning about an outbreak of the same disease in Hong Kong, eight years previous, I knew the seriousness of the issue. Hong Kong had to terminate approximately one million birds a day to defeat the disease. As an animal lover I find this number hard to stomach. However I also realized how serious this could be from a farmer’s point of view, especially third world farmers. Farmers in Africa have the potential to loose their way of income, as well as their primary food source. This flu will have more of an impact on African farmers than any other country that has been contaminated. This is because of lack of cooperation from the farmers. They don’t want their income to be shot and used for scientific testing, and this I can understand completely. I feel that these African farmers are going to be stuck in a bind, and at this point there isn’t a real way to ensure the safety of their poultry or their lives.

In the article there are many scientists talking about what can happen if these farmers do not follow the proper procedure. They also talk about the way African people live in close proximity with their animals. I don’t feel like these people are considering what they are saying. These scientists are not taking into account what they would do in this grievous situation. This could eventually put a lot of African people in a worse state than which they started. Maybe these critics are talking about the lives of birds, and not considering the lives of humans. After their poultry is gone what are they going to eat, how are they going to get money to buy food? This isn’t just about the killing of millions of birds, it is also about the potential death of many African farmers.

Poverty and Superstition Hinder Drive to Block Bird Flu at Source

About:

Bird Flu became a world wide scare when poultry and wild birds became infected. Now the fear will only worsen, because humans are now getting infected as well. So far there have only been four countries that have confirmed human bird flu, and these countries include Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. These are all countries that are not thoroughly civilized and live in close arrangements with their poultry.

Although there are other countries that have humans infected with bird flu, Cambodia is the main point of concern. In the 1970’s mostly all of Cambodia’s doctors were killed in the Khmer Rouge’s killings, and if they were not killed, they fled. So the medical personal that they currently obtain, are highly under qualified. One clinic in a Cambodian city (Phnom Penh) has a director that has not even completed junior high.

Not only is Cambodia uncivilized and improperly staffed, they are also highly superstitious. This was evident when a man murdered a woman with a machete, in order to stop the disease. Many others from the village agreed to pay him, so he could kill what they thought was a witch.

Thoughts:

Reading articles about the bird flu makes me think that a happy ending is nowhere in sight. When you have a possible pandemic with no one helping figure it out, hope seems unattainable. Cambodian people don’t trust the government, and now Cambodian people are not able to rust each other. Farmers are afraid of reporting their losses in fear that the government will assassin their livestock, without reimbursement. And now Cambodian civilians have to be worried about possible witchcraft accusations.

Cambodia has a long way to go. With the disease of bird flu only worsening, and with medical personnel no more qualified than the average Joe, it seems that there is a lot of work to do. The worst is yet to come, because it is now known that bird flu transfers at a faster rate in the winter. Doctors and scientists from around the world are trying to aid them, but the lack of resources just makes another obstacle.

China, Vietnam Report More Bird Flu Outbreaks

About:

It has recently been discovered that birds that are infected with avian flu also hold the antibodies. So in Japan they are taking in over 180,000 infected birds to start doing tests. This discovery has come to late for about 60 Asian people that have already passed away. It is now confirmed that bird flu can be passed from bird to human, but not from person to person.

This flu is not only affecting humans, but it is also affecting the flu carriers, the birds. In Liaoning, China they have been unable to contain bird flu, and over 9,000 chickens have died, not including 370,000 domestic birds. However good news may be on it’s way. This coming Monday health and veterinary officials will meet in Geneva to discuss the containment of avian flu.

Thoughts:

Now that avian flu is spreading even more rapidly from bird to bird, it seems that a pandemic is not far from sight. Scientists fear that migratory birds will cause this flu to spread, not just in the east, but also all over the world. People think that it isn’t their problem until it reaches them, but by that time it is almost to late. It is now known that avian flu can spread to humans, and if infected birds surround the world, what is going to stop the disease from spreading?

I have read many articles on bird flu, and as of now I am running out of ideas on how to stop this possible pandemic. It should send a world wide panic when it reaches Africa, because after that there is no stopping it. On Monday government officials will debate over the plan of action that is going to be taken, I just hope that it is not to late. In my opinion every attempt to recover a misfortune has taken to long.

Bird-Flu Battle In Eastern Asia Is to Be Joined By World Bank

About:

On Monday the World Bank officials met to consider the amount of money needed for Southeast Asian countries to battle Avian Flu. They came to the amount of 500 million dollars, but are going to meet next week about another tragic topic. The World Bank is going to discuss the amount of money that is going to be needed if Avian Flu begins to transmit from human to human. They are going to meet again in Geneva to consider the possible 800 billion dollar loan that may be needed for the pandemic.

Another topic at hand is Roche. This company produces medicine that can cure this frightful flu. Their product is called Tamiflu, and Roche has started to deliberate about which companies are going to help mass produce it. They have started to discuss the matter with eight companies out of the 150 that requested to be involved. One of the companies involved is a generic company that might be able to sell the medication for less.

Thoughts:

Reading about Avian Flu does not make me an expert on the subject, but I can’t imagine that this case would require 500 million dollars, or possibly more. I realize that it could become a pandemic and that would be most unfortunate, but what would all of the 500 million dollars go to. There would be costs involving veterinarians, medication, and scientists, but I think that the amount the World Bank has figured is astronomical.

Roche in my opinion has made a very wise decision. Letting other companies help in this large production can only reduce the chance of the Avian Flu becoming a pandemic. This comforts me, and it also makes me wonder if the mass production is going to be enough.

China Confirms Its First 3 Cases Of Bird Flu Infecting People

About:

The World Health Organization raves about China’s ability to react to disease. The WHO comments on their progress in 2003 dealing with SARS (Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and currently dealing with Bird Flu. China announced that they were going to vaccinate 5.2 billion chickens, as well as other poultry. China reacts intensely to the possible pandemic, and is going to the extreme. They have requested that all infectious diseases should be reported. They have even confirmed that they are receiving 10 thousand reports a day, and say that they have reviewed each one.

Although there have been several confirmed cases of infected birds, China has recently confirmed three infected humans. One was a woman in her mid-twenties, but the other two cases are considered to be more helpful. Scientists are concerned that one of the siblings retrieved it from the other. This would cause a belief that Avian Flu can be passed from human to human, and become a pandemic.

Thoughts:

Seeing China act so quickly makes me wish that our country could do the same. When a tsunami pummeled our country, we sat back and watched for a few days. However China in reaction of bird flu worked quickly. This shows that China is there for it’s people, and in this case it’s birds as well.

China is the fifth country to have confirmed bird flu in humans. Other countries consist of Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. They have each had a different number of cases, and fatalities. Vietnam has had the most and China coming in fifth has the least. All together there has been a reported 128 cases and 65 of them have been fatal. China has given the WHO, countries around the world, and myself hope concerning bird flu. They have shown a great example on how to react during an emergency, and how to react when something threatens their country.

Exploring A Hormone For Caring

About:

The University of Wisconsin has been doing research on orphans. They have found that orphans and normally raised children have different hormone levels, in two main hormones. One of these hormones is called oxytocin, and this hormone is responsible for triggering trust. Another hormone that is affected is called vasopressin, and this hormone makes it possible for humans to recognize individuals. These hormones have been proven to develop within months of being with a biological parent, however they are unable to develop under foster care situations.

This study has discovered that foster children have a hard time trusting, and a hard time recognizing people. A lack of these characteristics makes it next to impossible to make social connections. Therefore these children will not easily make friends or become close with adopted parents. This study has concluded a malicious ending for foster children, either ending in unhappiness or even suicide.

Thoughts:

I have grown up with several adopted children, and I have also become very close with them. I feel that a personality of an adopted child has to deal with that specific child, and/or how long they are in foster care. I can understand not being able to acquire personal relationships if you have spent a quarter of your life in a foster home. But as for children that are briefly in foster homes, I find this hard to believe. Children that are adopted briefly after they have been conceived, I believe should become normal.

There are many orphanages around the world, and a large percent of the world’s population has been adopted. I would say that you would develop oxytocin and vasopressin as long as you were loved. Regardless of being adopted, children can still maintain the ability to have happy and healthy lives.

I didn't know if we needed a Weekly Reflection or not. But it says that we need to Global Lits. next week. Anyway I already did my weekly so...

Part A:

I am taking a basic PE class, because it is required. To be honest I think that it is a big waste of time. This week my class had to complete our final physical testing. This testing involves crunches, push-ups, sit and reach, and other activities. To explain my frustration is fairly easy. Half of the class was there, and had friends sign in for them. And as for the testing, we never had to write down our results. I woke up at 8:00 AM every Tuesday and Thursday this term for the biggest joke of all college classes.

Part B:

Thanksgiving was this weekend and it was nice to get out of Monmouth. It was also nice to return to home and see the family. I had an interesting Thanksgiving, of course every holiday with my family is. I initially got home and found out that my grandfather, whom has never cooked, is making the turkey. I was also told that we would be eating a turducken that my uncle purchased. A turducken is actually a chicken inside of a duck, inside of a turkey. Eating this turducken made me think that there would never be a better time for a redneck joke.

I have been on student counsels and in clubs, and have also participated in sports. I love to interact with people and this is why I do them. So when it comes to schedules I seem to get a lot on my plate and this causes a problem. I tend to have so much going on I cant give my all to every project or every event. I go to all of my classes with the work and reading finished. I am proud of my work and excited to be in school. I don’t want to forget why I am here. I am here to be a future educator, and a good one at that. So by the end of fall term I don’t want to change something I want to keep something, my mentality. To keep my mind in the same place I need to keep healthy. Eating well and being in healthy shape help my mental state. This keeps me from getting sick, and not being able to attend class. -- AmandaSheelar - 28 Oct 2005 Part A: This week in English we were assigned our first, but not last group project. Proper groups included five to six people, however our group had three. We had little time to complete the project, and we were unsure about our professors’ expectations. In was fully astonished that the members of my group were very eager and willing to start on our project. I was amazed to find that our project was successfully completed. This has shown me what a positive educational experience this university can offer, and it makes me eager to encounter more.

Part B: Over the weekend I made an effort to fraternize with my younger sister and her new boyfriend. In doing so we invited him to our home and ate dinner. After we had finished a rather quiet awkward dinner we decided to finish up the night with a little competition. My sister had told me that her boyfriend (Bret) was a first-class basketball player. When we dropped him off later that night I gave my sister the approval she had been waiting for. Now all she needed was the approval of our very protective dad.

Part A:

Surprisingly this week was a good one, even though I had received a few of my midterm grades. Most importantly I received my biology midterm grade. I had high hopes going into the classroom and a lot of confidence. However my biology teacher didn’t feel that our class should be confident at all, because our class average was sixty-one percent. As he passed the tests out I became more and more anxious. After I received my test I was slightly disappointed, only to find out I got one of the best grades. Moral of the story, god bless grading curves.

Part B:

Last night I decided to participate in my halls Halloween party. After attending late with no costume, I was surprised to find out how dressed up everyone was. We played one of my favorite games, called Catch Phrase, and we also played a game called Werewolf. When the night was about to come to an end we voted on best costume. A boy in a liger costume and a girl in a punk rock outfit won, although I thought the girl dressing up as a pregnant woman took the cake. It was without a doubt a good time.

-- AmandaSheelar - 21 Oct 2005 Part A: Before attending college I was very frightened about my educational status. I was afraid college was going to be a challenge, a challenge that I was not ready for. This week however has proved otherwise, especially in my biology classroom. This week was my biology midterm, and naturally I was nervous. Thankfully my professor provided a study session for those in need of academic aid. This classroom activity was extremely beneficial and appreciated. For this was the first time I had left a biology classroom with complete confidence. It helped me look at college with more enthusiasm than apprehension.

Part B: I am excited to report that I have fully enjoyed living in the dorms these past three weeks. Although many people are hours from home, and missing their biological families, we have formed a different kind of family here at school. This family was visibly presented this week as our hall decorated for Halloween. We demonstrated teamwork as well as passion towards a common goal. In the end we all have become very proud of our decorated hall, and our family. However, we are now impatiently waiting for Halloweens arrival.

Part A:

This week was quite an experience when I found out that professors actually do make mistakes. In one of my classes our teacher was giving a midterm, and on the review he informed us that we were able to use our notes. However when we entered our class this past Thursday he seemed shocked and confused. He even asked why we had brought our book and notes. In this predicament he had to let us use our notes, and now looking back the mistake was very much appreciated. On my midterm I received an A.

Part B:

The girls in my hall have become relatively close over the past six weeks. We share stories and have many things to discuss. Last night we stayed up well past midnight, talking about “The New York Times”. Although everyone has expressed their hatred towards Freshman Academy, it was refreshing having an educated conversation between my peers. It brings me confidence knowing that people my age can form their own opinions, and that they do care about the world around them. To be honest, this is the first time I have felt that I was in a university atmosphere.

-- AmandaSheelar - 04 Nov 2005

Part A:

I feel that I am putting more into college than I am getting out. It seems that I am over achieving everything I am assigned. For example I had a project midterm due this week. I had the idea that this assignment was going to be prestigiously graded, since it was our midterm. However, when I attended class this last past week a large majority of students did not feel the same way. My project has not yet been graded, but I feel I have again wasted more time overachieving.

Part B:

I am not fully anemic, but I am borderline anemic. This disorder makes the quality of my blood decrease, which is sad because I am 0 negative, which is a rare blood type. Over the last few months I have been eager to give blood, because I think it is a fulfilling experience. In my attempt to give blood I have tried consuming foods with large percentages of iron, but iron supplements were the only thing that worked. I am pleased to announce that yesterday was the first time in a year that I was able to donate blood.

-- AmandaSheelar - 10 Nov 2005 Part A:

I love using the Internet because of its convenience, but it can also be very deceiving. So far this year I have not had to write a great abundance of papers. However I have had to do one project that required Internet browsing. A lot of the resources I used were scholarly resources, and I know this because they end in either .edu or .gov. These sites are usually more useful, and more credited. I am not going to lie and say that I have only used these sites, I am sure I have used sites that are not scholarly.

Part B:

In my own home we have had the Internet for about five years. To be honest I could not imagine having to do school work without the Internet. Not only do I use it for schoolwork, but I also love downloading songs and music videos. At home we did not have high speed Internet, so surfing the web was not worth the time it took to complete anything. So having high speed Internet at school this year is definitely a benefit to college.

-- AmandaSheelar - 18 Nov 2005

Part A:

I researched on the Holocaust and it amazing how much information you can find on it. If you simply enter “Holocaust” to a search engine you can easily get 100 different pages of information. However the search can easily be narrowed, and there are less pages on the topic. Just by entering a name or a date will give you a narrow search, if any information at all. The opposite can also be true, when a search is to broad it is hard to find information that can be used in a report.

Part B:

Researching the Holocaust gave me a lot of information, as well as a lot of photos. I learned that there were two different kinds of concentration camps. One kind was referred to as concentration camps, where they mostly held Jews. However there were also another kind called extermination camps. In these camps people were held only to be executed, prisoners who entered, would not come out. Both concentration camps and extermination camps were spread out all over Europe, not just in Germany.

Title: Slow Progress In Bali Inquiry Hints at Wilier Terror Groups Author: Raymond Bonner

Summary: An investigation into Bali terrorist bombings over a month ago has yet to yield any leads or breakthroughs. The slow progress of the investigation has lead investigators and officials to believe that the terrorist network in Southeast Asia has become more sophisticated in carrying out their attacks and in avoiding detection. Indonesian Officials and Western Security specialists have reason to believe that the preparations and/or the bombs were made in the Philippines. Things like training the suicide bomber, and assembly of the back-pack bomb which has detonation wires sown into the straps, would have take place there. Investigators have been lead to believe that the bombs were made by a man who is number three on the Bush Administration’s list of most wanted terrorists, Mr. Dulmatin. He was the master mind behind the first Bali Bombings three years ago. He was trained in explosives in an Al Quaeda camp in Afghanistan during the 1990’s. No arrests have been made in this investigation which is in contrast to recent suicide bombing investigations in 2002, where a van full of explosives exploded outside a nightclub in Bali killing 202 people. The chassis number on the van was still identifiable which led to a quick arrest. But since the perpetrators are using smaller, less effective bombs, so as not to be detected, it is becoming increasingly difficult to detect their terrorist behavior. One of the suicide bombers was caught on tape with the back pack bomb and appeared to have no trouble walking around with the package. So for no arrests have been made even though the three suicide bomber’s faces have been posted all over the news, news papers and on fliers.

Analysis: Terrorist groups are becoming smarter and more deceitful. The fact that no arrests have been made points to the fact that they have a better understanding of what they are doing, how they are doing it, and what they can and cannot get away with. Some of the materials may very well have entered the country before the suicide bombers. This creates a very small window of time for any outsider to identify them. The type of explosives in all three bombings have not been identified, showing that they have taken extra precautions to remain anonymous. In this current investigation the terrorists have given authorities very little, if not nothing, to go off of. Leaving them frustrated and with no where to look. The terrorists obviously learned from the nightclub bombing in Bali that they cannot afford to be caught again because some one much higher up in their chain of command must be running the show. Why else would they take so many precautions? Why else would the make the effort to become completely untraceable? It is believed that small group is involved in the Bali bombings and two of the main bomb makers in the first two Bali attacks, Azahari Husin and Dulmatin, are prime suspects. The US has offered a $10 million dollar reward for information leading to Dulmatin. But in the mean time, with smarter terrorists and undetectable explosives, there is an extremely high likelyhood of more suicide bombing attacks in the near future.

So why is this important and what should be done about it? This is important in more places than just Bali, if a man can walk into a crowded area with a back pack on and suddenly explode in Bali, what is to keep him from walking through Grand Central Station, or Time Square, or LAX, or outside the gates of the White House at peak hours. What is to stop someone from doing the same while touring Buckingham Palace, or visiting the UN? Right now, nothing is preventing that. Thousands of people walk through all of those areas at any given time of day wearing back-packs, carrying large purses, or totes. Would it really be as unimaginable as we think? Every one always says, “Oh that will never happen to me.” But think about it, the collapse of the Twin Towers happened to us.

Personal and Profession Growth Statement Amber Rose Kottre Team 10

Right now I’m on the beginning of a new journey. A fun and new experience is waiting out there for me and all I have to do it reach out and take what is offered to me. As a student I procrastinate too much and I get frustrated at my work but I always complete things and I try as hard as I can to do my best at anything I do. In high school I was really big into orchestra and I loved that class. I’m pretty disappointed that there isn’t an orchestra here at WOU but I can just play on my own. My personal goals are pretty much to stop procrastinating and just sit down and do what I need to do. I plan on seizing every opportunity offered to me here that has to do with what I want to do as a career which is hopefully becoming a CSI. My strengths about myself as I am right now would be that I have good people skills, I’m a fairly fast learner, a quick study, and if I find something that strikes my interest, I pour everything into it. My biggest challenges will defiantly be buckling down and get my work done because I procrastinate too much. I do get frustrated pretty easily about irrelevant things. My biggest challenge considering social and extracurricular activities will be time because of home work and specifically because of the fact that there is no orchestra. Changes I would like to make by the end of the term would be that I hopefully can get rid of my procrastination problem. I would like to be on top of everything academically and I would like to find out more about how to get into the field of study that I’d like to go into, which is Crime Scene Investigation. Steps in assisting me along my way this term will be just forcing myself to get into the habit of getting down to business as soon as I possibly can, which will also help me stay on top of my academic schedule. I will need to visit another Crime lab, talk to some people in the police department and maybe the police academy on campus to find out more about my field interest.

A. My favorite experience this past week was in my Current issues in Biology class. We had a discussion about stem cell research and cloning. Our class is really small, eight people to be exact, and the discussion was really nice. Every one could be heard and we could productively have a discussion rather than having a huge group debate where no one gets heard. We could all say our own opinions and there was no right or wrong answer. No one shot down your opinion even if they disagreed because it was a productive discussion about why its an issue to be able to clone or do research using stem cells.

B. This week I pretty much just went to my classes and then went to work. I’m not really involved in any way with the school other that classes which is perfectly fine with me. I like just hanging out with my new friends here and making more new friends. I work at Tjmaxx in Salem and I like

Amber Rose Kottre Freshman Academy Team 10 Weekly Reflection Three

A) My most memorable experience in my classes this past week was my Biology and Chemistry mid terms. They were very hard and I studied hard but I still did really poorly, well, more like terribly. I failed them pretty much. I am looking into tutoring and I am definitely going to study harder and more purposefully. I really need to get good grades and I really need to buckle down and work my butt off because there is a lot of pressure in my family to do well and I don’t aim to disappoint.

B) I have done way too much screwing around this week. I have gone to hang out with friends when I should have been studying and I will not let myself do that again no matter how much fun every one else is having. I don’t think I even came home before eleven every night which leaves me no time to study when I have to be at class at eight or nine a.m.. I worked again this weekend and I even worked at the past couple of football games because I’m an usher.

Amber Rose Kottre Freshman Academy Team 10 Weekly Reflection 2

A. My favorite experience this past week was once again my Current Issues in Biology Class. We began discussing the Human Genome Project and how we are similar to creatures of the past. Our genetic structure’s evolution, in a sense, is shown in the Human Genome. We also had to turn in our first paper, written about Stem Cells and Cloning. The class is probably my favorite because it peaks my interest and makes me think about things from a different point of view and also through my own view in an environment where I am free to discuss my opinion openly with out being shushed.

B. Well, this week I went to most of my classes and I did a lot of studying for my mid terms. I worked on Friday and Saturday, which was boring but I dealt with it. In our Hall we have Battle of the Sexes every Tuesday. I went to that and I had a lot of fun. I went shopping and had a ton of fun hanging out with friends in my dorm. Dorm life is really fun, its nice living out of my parents house but not all alone.

Way back in high school, I was a run-of-the-mill student. I took a couple AP courses, and ran with the smart kids, but I was pretty normal. I ran a freshman mentorship program, I was a leader in a Christian club, I wrote for the news paper, and I sold advertising space for the paper, as well. The think was that I actually learned really well. I can pick things up really fast. I learned most of what I know in the classes because the class would go as fast as I learned. My strengths and weaknesses varied. I was kind of an elitist when it came to organizing clubs, but I was well respected as having a vision for leadership. Like I said, I learned really fast, but I could not learn in a slow moving environment…or things like art. I did work hard, but I was never as good as the people I was around. I did take harder classes then most though. I would love to be a better studier. I have always lacked the ability to study for long periods of time, and that is one thing that I would like to have accomplished by the end of this year. I would also like to be more organized. I am too scattered to be at my full effectiveness. The steps that I can take are just work. I need to just sit down and do it. There is nothing more than just good old fashioned elbow grease to assist me in my growth here at Western Oregon University.

This is the first time that the site has let me on in a while, so where do I begin. I have been able to keep up with all my work…except for this class. I am doing well on all the tests that I am taking. I am looking forward to dead week and finals because I usually do very well on tests. I did miss one midterm because I had to take my neighbor to the hospital, but I was able to make it up. My teacher was very understanding. I have been running around for the past week working on getting money for Thanksgiving baskets for less fortunate families in the Monmouth area. Our goal was nine baskets, one per community. We were able to buy twenty two baskets. It was amazing. The Landers residents really stepped it up. After that, we worked on getting money for decorating a Christmas tree for families. It is put on by the Student Activity Board. We are very excited to be able to help out all these families.

Andrew Ahrendt

This week I did not do very well on attending classes. It started poorly because Monday I had to make a haunted house for Landers Hall. I was really tired so I missed the next day’s morning class. That night I had to help out with the midnight breakfast and that went until around one. I missed Wednesday’s morning class because of that, too. After that, my whole sleep schedule has been off and I missed all the morning classes all week long except for one, but it is alright because both teachers that I have for them are gone sick and we didn’t do anything in class. I did do all the work for them though, so I am totally up to date. I did a lot of things with my friends over the week because I was around doing things for hall government. I was able to see some old friends last weekend because I went back home to my high school homecoming and they were all there. I also got to see some new friends that came into town last night from Portland. All in all, I had a stressful but good week.

-- LeanaDickerson - 08 Nov 2005

I started off this week on task, which is actually pretty good, because I had had a stressful weekend. I was totally caught up with all my work to the extent that I was watching movies for the first couple of nights because there was nothing else to do. On Tuesday night, that changed, though, because I had to do quite a bit of work for a couple different things. I was able to keep up with my studies, though. I just couldn’t watch a movie. I enjoy watching movies so it was kind of sad. After that, I had a bit of trouble to keep up, but I was able to survive and hold it all together. The reason I hit some problems on Tuesday was because I am the Hall Activities Director for Landers therefore I am making the annual Haunted Lounge. It is a bit of work trying to make it good, so I have been working on it through all of my spare time. I have also been spending time with some old friends that had come into town over the weekend. I had not seen them in quite a while, so when they came I gave them my full attention. All in all, I had a pretty good week.

-- AndrewAhrendt - 18 Oct 2005

This week I learned that I did really well last week in all of my studies. I was afraid that I had not done as well as I had hoped because I was over booked. It turned out that I was on top of things because I got an A my Intro to Lit: Fiction class mid term and a B on my Popular Music in America exam. I am doing really well, but my fear is that I will relax and not actually do all the work that I have to do because I feel as though I am doing really well. I don’t really have anything new to report about my social life. A couple buddies of mine from Portland came down and surprised me on Thursday. We hung out all day. I hadn’t seen them since I came here so it was a great surprise. We went into Salem and watched the movie “Waiting…” which was actually a really great movie. I plan on buying it and showing it to they guys in my hall so we can play the game from it. Other than that, I really haven’t had any new experience. I have my keyboard now. That is about it.

ARTICLE: Article Says Diabetes Pill Would Increase Coronary Risks

SUMMARY: A diabetes pill, Pargulva, is seemingly having an adverse affect on it's users, bringing about higher risks for heart attacks and strokes. The drugs' sponsors, Bristol-Meyers Squibb and Merck, are suspected to have provided "disingenuous" data to the Food and Drug Administration, thus fostering the illusion of safety.

THOUGHTS: Two things grabbed my attention in regards to this article. The first was the suspicion regarding the drug's sponors not procuring complete data from the testing. The article never stated whether or not statement to be true, but the thought that someone like myself, with whom diabetes runs in my family, could possibly at risk for heart failure (another trait in my family genes) because some company wanted their product to look good is troubling to say the least. The second thing that I noticed was when there was a panel regarding the coronary risks involved with using Pargulva, there was no cardiologist sitting on the panel to discuss them. When the risks of a drug are great enough to kill someone, I believe it would be imperitive to have at least two people qualified in those areas sitting at a panel. The fact that none were present does not sit well with me. Needless to say this article would make me think twice before I considered using this medication or recommending it to someone.

Headline: F.D.A. to Weigh At-Home Testing For AIDS Virus

About: Federal Drug regulators and the FDA are discussing the idea of an at home AIDS test, similar to that of pregnancy test. The idea would be to create an effect method of testing in the privacy of one's own home. This product has never made it to mainstream because of the uncertanty of how people will react to the test. It is thought that many people who were diagnosed positive by the test would panic, and possibly attempt suicide without the counseling and support health centers could provide. A federal advisory board will be discussing the proposal for the at home AIDS test on Nov 3 to determine if it should be allowed for public use.

Thoughts: Like most subject revolving around health and politics, this one is very tricky, and indeed does have the potential to be disastrous. Although not infected myself, nor do I know anyone who is, I understand the fear of AIDS virus better than most people would believe, and the grip of fear it has on the all sexually active communities. I can't honestly have an opinion on this topic either way, simply because I do not human nature enough to know how people will react. Provided the testing is accurate, I cannot forsee a serious problem with a product like this made available for the public.

Bristol-Meyers May End Plans For Oral Diabetes Treatment

Summary Bristol Meyers and it's partner company Merck are considering abandoning their proposed diabetes drug, called Pargluva. The drug was meant to be an oral treatment for diabetes that regulates blood sugar while improving fat cells in the blood. However several tests showed an increase in cardiovascular related risks. The companies are weighing whether more research is needed to reduce the risks, or to simply drop the project.

Response I actually think this article is slightly humurous because last week I had used another article with the exact same drug in question. It makes me happy to see that the companies are thinking with more concern now, and it it gives a more secure feeling that should I ever become diabetic, I know there is one less risky treatment out there. If it were me on the board of Bristol Meyers I would most likely be pushing for further research to determine if it would be possible to reduce the cardiovascular risks. But just that the companies are showing concern over their product and attempting to fix their errors is enough.

Merck Prevails in 2nd Vioxx Case on Heart Attack

Summary: The Drug company Merck won its second court case regarding accusations of personal injuries from using their medicine. Frederick Humeston had accused the company that taking Vioxx, a painkiller medicine, had caued him to have a heart attack back in September 2001. The court's 8-1 vote did not agree that there was sufficient evidence to prove the statement true. Legal experts say the flood of lawsuits could slow down with this second decisive victory.

Analysis: It's actually quite amazing to me. In the past three weeks I have written these reviews all regarding potentially dangerous medicines that have come from Merck. With all of the allegations being put forth towards this company, it makes me think that perhaps it is not the wisest of ideas to be using their products. It is true, they did win a second decisive victory in the courtroom, but I have yet to see an article placing Merck's products in a good light. It has always been a negative, or neutral reaction I receive from reading about them. It makes me much more inclined to think twice about purchasing any medication that is manufactured from this company.

With Three Blasts, the Mundane and Joyous Alike Are Transformed Into the Unthinkable

Summary The article discusses three serperate suicide bombings in Amman, Jordan. The article talks about how at each bombing location the various events happening, from simply coffee to a wedding ceremony, and how each bombing completely altered the lives of those who survived the blast.

Review When you get so caught up with whatever is going on in your own life, people tend to forget whatever can be happening right around them, much less what is happening across the world. The bride and groom in the wedding that was destroyed by the suicide bomber must be living in constant fear now, because of what could happen if they tried to get married a next time. The groom lost his father in the first time, do they really want to try again after that? And those who were just trying to live their lives normally in a different bombing are now dead or afraid to take that sip of coffee because the last time they tried it they were nearly blown up. I'm really lucky that all I had to worry about is a stupid paper on cancer.

Father Accused of Killing Girl, 7, After New York Returned Her to His Care

Summary A New York father is accused and charged for killing his 7 year old daughter after she was returned to his custody from Foster Care. Upon the girl's birth she was tested positive for cocaine in her system and was removed from her parents and placed into child care. When she was returned to her father she had been in the hospital twice, once for a broken leg and another for spinal fractures, both of which the father claimed were accidents. An autopsy showed the girl had sever internal injuries. Prosecuters say that the injuries were caused by her father kneeing her in the abdomen and beating her with a belt.

Review Two things sicken me when I was reading the article. The first was obviously the suffering that this 7 year old girl dealt with from her birth. Testing positive for cocaine was not enough to keep her separated from her birth parents, and when she is given back to her father she ends up dead shortly after. As twisted as the father was, why didn't the legal systems do more to get that girl as far away from him as possible?

The other thing that sickens me as I read this atrocity is that people believe they are doing the world a favor when they keep same sex couples from raising a child, like this, who comes from a broken family. This type of thing happens all the time everywhere and rarely ever does it reach mainstream. If people wanted children to grow up in safer environments then this is what they should be combating. They should be fighting to keep children away from abusive families who snort cocaine while pregnant, not from potentially upstanding men and women who want to raise her and give her a good home. I could name at least 3 same sex couples who would have wanted to have her and done an outstanding job too.

When It Needs Cleaning in the Very Worst Ways

Summary The article discusses a company called Bio-Recovery Corporation. The companies job involves cleaning up bio matter from corpses, often resulted from murders and suicides. The article gives plenty of grisly details about particular jobs the company does, ranging from cleaning blood from a kitchen because of a gunshot to the head to cleaming up decomposition from a sofa an elderly man died on a month ago, and many other disgusting examples. The reasoning for a job like this is to give friends and families peace of mind that they will not have to be the ones who end up cleaning the remains of a murder or suicide victim in their life.

Review I'm surprised at myself for being shocked that a company like this would actually exist, in New York of all places too. It is a very good idea to have a professional cleaning company like this that can eliminate dead remains after a crime scene investigations for two big reasons. The first one is for physical health reasons. When you have a professional company doing the afterward clean up, you can be sure that the place will be habitable for others to be in and not become a festering ground for diseases, not to mention odor. The second is psychologically linked, in respect to those mourning the dead. An example would be a grisly murder of a family member, the company could ensure that the family would not need to see the actual scene or leave behind any reminders. It's not a job that I could necessarily do (having a nervous stomach and all), but it's good that people who can do the job are around doing it. -- AndrewSurber - 28 Nov 2005

High School was basically a blur all four years. Since the level of professionalism was limited and requirements were low, I found it difficult to even begin contemplating my true potential. And growing up in a secluded town gave little options to become involved. Starting college classes makes me feel like I have stepped into a new world of education. The level of professionalism, even in the presumably simplest of classes, is far beyond what I experienced in all four years of high school. With this in mind, I know certain parts of me will require adjustment to complete the courses with at least satisfactory results. As a learner basic understandings and the ability to retain knowledge has come very naturally to me, and because of this fact, the need to develop solid study habits was never an issue. However with all the new material just from fall courses, I am already feeling overwhelmed and without a sense of direction. My goal to grow as a learner has two parts. First thing I need to do is develop a method of organization that will allow me to separate the daily intake of information from various courses and to record any assignments that must be completed so that I make sure to complete it in a timely manner. My ideas to get organization for my classes is to purchase folders and a white board from the University Center so I can file papers and notes accordingly and to write down any homework or required reading for individual classes. The one aspect of student life I rarely engaged in was the act of studying. I do not mean just skimming notes, but reviewing texts and using various methods for knowledge retention. This decision is looked up by me as a regrettable one, because there is most definitely much knowledge that good studying habits could have provided, which the opportunity is now lost. With the abundance of materials available to me now, it is my goal to involve myself more with active studying and reading. The act of studying will be a mental decision I must make everyday to devote myself to better understanding of lessons and lectures. I do not regret my decision of non-participation in extra-curricular events in high school. What is regrettable to me is that growing up in a small town with a conservative nature, there was nothing I truly wanted to be involved with. My goal to become more active with groups and organizations has already been successful, as I am involved in both Triangle Alliance and in Hall Government for my residential hall. I am hoping these groups will enhance not only my social skills, but also my academic skills as well by being more involved with what is going on around me on campus. With these goals in mind I intend to make the most of my stay here at Western Oregon University. I am told that college is about broadening your horizons and working toward finding a path in life. Whatever horizons I may see, or whatever my life’s path is, I plan to discover just what I am truly capable of with my full potential.

When people tell me how much different college is from anything I would have experience so far, they were not lying. The classrooms are so much more professional and courteous towards the instructor, and to the students as well. However, that professionalism also affects the classwork load as well. My recent test in Biology proved itself to be much more difficult than I had anticipated. While I expect a passing grade on the test, I do not expect my goal of a B. I am not discouraged by this however, I'll just take better notes and study better next time.

October 11 was National Coming Out Day, a day of celebration of the GLBT and ally community. I volunteered my services at their table set up outside the Werner Center and attended the Panel held in the Oregon Room. While the turnout was not what we had hoped for, I feel the entire experience was very rewarding. I look forward to working a lot more with the GLBT and ally community in the future.

Weekly Reflection For October 23, 2005

Classroom Experience: I have experience my first round of testing for all my courses this last week. In all areas I feel my effort was satisfactory except in my Biology lectures. The restuts from last Friday's tests were revealed to the class, my score was a 75%. While this grade is not terrible, my expectations of myself are higher. I work for A's in all my classes, but strive for a B average. When I do not achieve what I strive for, it does leave me with a sinking feeling. But I will not dwell on what cannot be changed, but rather I will use this as an example to myself for what is required of me if I hope to obtain the B grade I desire.

Activies: There has not been much going on in my groups these past few weeks. Mostly we are planning bigger events that will happen in the near and distant future. I do have responsibilities towards my groups as treasuer for Gentle Hall Government and scretary for Triangle Alliance, but I do not have the depressing feeling of obligation, which is a good thing. I enjoy being involved and wanting to put in 100% to the group. There is little to say for this week, but I'm hoping that will change for next week's reflection.

In Class This week felt pretty stressed for me, but their are good reasons for the feeling. This week I had begun processing a room change form and had switched rooms near the end of the week. My Thursday, which is usually used for catching up on class work and studying, was taken up because I was busy moving all of my belongings to my new dorm. So unfortunately I am forced to commit more weekend time to catching up on my studying, but even though I do feel stressed at this point, I believe the change will be for the better.

Out of Class I went to my first club this weekend. A friend of mine invited me to The Escape in Portland, and underage dance club. The experience was great, except for when the heavy bass that pounded throughout my entire body shook up my already weak stomach. I didn't vomit or anything, but it did cause me enough pain the my friends decided it was time to leave. I'm feeling a little bit of the after effects today, since I'm having difficulty even concentrating on this, but I guess that's what happens when one is up till four in the morning dancing. Chances are I won't be back at the club again too soon, at least not until I get something that can keep my stomach calm.

Classwork: I had my second midterm in biology today. I had thought myself well enough prepared to do well this time around. Unfortunately that may not have been the case. Most of the questions I covered in review and knew very well were either not included in the test, or were buried in the questions so deep that they were not recognizable, while the sections I struggled with encompassed a larger majority of the whole exam. I also found myself second guessing many of my answers, especially since a good quanity of them were "All of the Above." So once again I'm hoping to be in the 75% range.

Out of Class: This was my first full week in my new dorm room. The shift has been awkward, but I'm starting to settle in with my new surroundings quite well. The first half of the week I had internet withdrawals since my connection was not working for reasons unkown to me. I finally got it up and running Thursday and wasted no time in catching up with my Instant Messenger buddies.

Internet Research

A1: For the most part, internet research was mainly personal since most of the research requirements for classwork required me to use the WOU library instead of the internet.

A2: The major benefit and problem with internet research is actually the same thing. There is a lot of information on pretty much any topic you want to look for. The good thing about this is that you can pretty much always find what you're looking for, but the downside is that since there is a lot of information on topics, it can be difficult sometimes getting the accurate information from all the useless or incorrect information.

B1: I have used the internet for pretty much everything, so definitely yes for personal research. motor vehicle purchases and technology reviews are the two that come to mind right now.

B2: The internet was a common thing in my household growing up, although I never really grasped it's usefullness until late into High School.

Reflection

A: I had my most difficult assignment to do this week so far in the course of my college career. In my biology lab we were assigned to research a specific type of cancer and a contributing gene. In a maximum of three pages we needed to describe the cancer and it's impact on the US and Global populations if possible, and to describe the gene and how it contributed to the production of the cancer in the body. The researching had to utilize the library's resources, so it was definitely a challenge to not simply use the interent for information gathering, but I have managed to write what I believe is a very well thought out paper with all the necessary information. I just hope my professor thinks so as well.

B: I wish I could think of more things that I have done outside of the classroom this week, but alot of my time was spent focused on preparing and making sure I stayed caught up in all my classwork and notes, and at this point I'm actually still not completely caught up in everything. Everytime I stop to think about going out to do something, I remember yet another thing I need to get done for the coming week. Fortunately it's not any giant assignments or anything, it's just a lot of little things that seem like a lot. Once I get going they should all be completed in virtually no time. My only trouble is finding the necessary motivation.

Research Topic: Same Sex Marriages

The topic of Same Sex Marriage is no doubt a cotroversial topic in many settings, and college is no exception. However when doing a topic that has such a profound impact on people from both sides of the argument, I found it best to focus on the main ideas and avoiding any information that would cause the reader or audience to tune me out. The research for Same Sex Marriage is not difficult to locate, especially with the mainstream attention it had recently received. The trouble with the research is discerning the facts from the extremist opinions from both sides of the argument. Many times I found myself using some unique approaches in locating the facts.

An example would be the threat to religions that many people believe would occure if Same Sex Marriage is legalized. Both sides may argue their points, but researching the facts to determine whether or not the statement is true took some roundabout thinking and research in areas many would not think to look in. The statement is false because the first ammendment in the constitution protects the freedom or religions from government laws, meaning that no religion would be forced to change their beliefs because of the passing of any law. The only difference that the law would make is it would give the religions the option of holding a legally sanctioned marriage between same sex couples if they wanted. They would still reserve the right to refuse the marriage in their church.

Personal Growth Statement

My experiences throughout high school have influenced my character. I learned many lessons regarding work ethic, and involvement with extracurricular and social activities. In high school, I was always a good student, completed my work consistently, and tried to do my best. However, I did lack two important attributes: quality and the ability to balance multiple commitments. My work was good, but not at the level it could have been.

My work ethic changed dramatically when I joined Cross Country. I had to become dedicated because of the amount of effort that was expected. I learned how to be committed for the team and for myself. The amount of effort I exerted into Cross Country influenced my academic work ethic, too. As a result, I became a better student and took pride in my work.

Now, I am able to use my high school experiences as tools in my college career. I feel confident of my skills as I start college. I know that I can achieve anything I want to because of my previous success. I have determination, dedication, perseverance and the ability to set goals.

The two biggest challenges I face at the beginning of this term are stress and making time for extracurricular activities. I know I can improve in each area during college, and I plan to do so by the end of Fall term.

Stress over schoolwork is my main challenge. My biggest stressor comes when I have to do group work or when I do not completely understand an assignment.

So far, I am very stressed over Freshman Academy. I have been thinking about it ever since I registered (and was told it was a required class). The thought of working in groups has been frustrating due to past experiences. Most of the time, I had to do all of the group work since no one else would take responsibility. I have been fearful of this problem in college since it could jeopardize my chance for good grades. An added stressor to Freshman Academy is that I have yet to meet with any person in authority who has a clear answer for how the Academy functions. During the Freshman Academy Seminar, I expected to learn about the assignments and how to use the website. My expectations were not fulfilled. I have still not received any specific information regarding Freshman Academy except for its benefits.

The first step in overcoming my stress is to meet with competent authorities who can give clear information. I know my stress level will decrease when I am not as confused as I am at the moment. I would like to learn how to earn a good grade in the class and learn the expectations of the instructors. Another step in overcoming my stress is to continually remember that I have several strengths. I am willing to work hard, and I am able to rise to the occasion and become a group leader. I am good at encouraging my team members. I know that a team can be successful if the members work together and have a devoted leader. I am good at organizing and giving everyone an equal share of the work.

My other big challenge for this term is to overcome the tendency to limit my extracurricular activities because I worry that I will not finish my homework for a class. I hope I will learn how to balance my activities and work Fall term. I want to be an involved student at Western, while earning good grades. In addition to Cross Country’s influence on my work, I also became more socially active. I was competing against myself, but I was also part of a team. The goals we shared individually and as part of the team built long-lasting bonds. I made friendships that have continued to grow since then.

So, I have learned that extracurricular activities are an important part of making me a well-rounded individual. My college career will be much more valuable if I can make time for more than just academic work.

The first step in improving in this area is to remember that I have strength in my ability to meet people. I love meeting new people and learning about their lives. I am good at carrying a conversation and asking thoughtful questions. I am always fascinated by the stories everyone has to tell because all of the stories are unique. I think it is important to hear everyone’s story—good or bad. I know that I will have the chance to meet many people at Western because of the various clubs that are available.

I plan to be involved with Campus Crusade for Christ, Club Ed and College Republicans by the end of Fall term. I know that I will meet a wide variety of people with common interests, and I will make new friends.

Another step to improving in this area is that I will learn how to balance my work by setting up a schedule. Creating a schedule will help me to be a good student and participant. A schedule will keep me organized and will also reduce my stress level.

I hope to continually use my high school experiences as a guide to becoming a better person. I know that the lessons I learned in high school will help me achieve great goals in college. I will use my perseverance and determination to help me through the stressful times.

I plan to accomplish my goals of being involved and being an excellent student. If I follow through with my plans, I will make positive changes by the end of Fall term.

Weekly Reflections 10/10-10/14

A professor was complimenting the most memorable event this week. I was sort of shocked to receive such a compliment. I was told that I was a good student, and that I am doing well in the class. As a result of the professor’s compliment, I am even more determined to work hard in the class. I want to earn a really good grade, but I know I can only achieve my goal; if I put in 100% of my effort. I am going to persevere whenever I might feel overwhelmed or confused. I plan to ask for help if needed, and stay consistent with my work habits. I know that if I focus, I will become a better student, and that is my ultimate goal.

This week I was involved with several clubs. On Tuesday, I went to Club Ed and Campus Crusade for Christ. Then on Thursday, I went to College Republicans. All of these clubs will aid me in becoming a stronger student, and a good community member. Club Ed will help me in being an informed future-teacher. The club will allow me to be involved with the community; by volunteering at the schools. In addition to volunteering, my spiritual life is also very important. Being with fellow Christians is a great way for me to grow, and to make new friends. Finally, being a member of College Republicans will help me to be more informed. I feel that I can be a better citizen if I am informed on a variety of issues. All of these clubs will be a positive influence in my life, and I will have a good experience at WOU because of them.

Weekly Reflections 10/17-10/22

I took my first college midterm this week, which was very significant. The midterm consisted of mostly multiple choice and short answer questions. I felt very confident about the multiple choice part of the test. I was able to recall the information I needed in order to successfully answer the questions. I took my time and did not let myself feel pressured. I knew I could do my best if I just focused on the test. Once I finished the multiple choice portion, I read through each of the short answer questions carefully. I was challenged with a few questions, but I answered them with the best of my abilities. When I finished, I felt confident of my results. Now, I am anxiously awaiting the grade I will receive.

Outside of the classroom, the most memorable event was spending time with my roommate, Jennifer. This week Jennifer and I were stressed about schoolwork, and wanted to relieve stress. On Friday, Jennifer and I decided to be random. Jennifer put on classical music, and then put on dresses. I put my camera on my tripod, and took pictures of us attempting to dance. Jennifer and I had a wonderful time, and felt less stressed after hanging out. Plus, the memories will always be with us of being goofy. I am so thankful for the random moments, which make the best memories.

Weekly Reflection 10/24-10/28

This week I received a good grade on an English paper I wrote. I had been worried about the results, even though I had worked hard on the assignment. When I received the grade, I felt satisfied and relieved. In addition, I also learned how the professor graded students’ work, and now I know what he is expecting on future assignments. In addition to earning a good grade, I was an active participant in my Earth Science class. I read the assigned chapter and taken notes, so that I would be able to answer questions in class. Nonetheless, I understood the information better since I did not do the assignment at last minute.

Outside of the classroom, I attended club meetings. One of the most significant meetings was Campus Crusade for Christ. As a Christian, I value my relationship with God. I also believe that I should worship God with fellow Christians. This week I learned the true importance of giving my life for Him. God has the best plan for me, and I know that if I dedicate my life to Him—everything will be fine in the end. I am so thankful to be reminded of God’s promise throughout the week, and that I can share my joy with other Christians. Being a member of Campus Crusade for Christ has truly enriched my experience at Western.

Weekly Reflections 10/31-11/4

The most memorable class-related event was turning my first college paper. I had been working on the paper for about a week, but I still had to stay up late to finish it. I went to the Writing Center to get assistance, which was a beneficial appointment. I feel as though I was able to write a better paper. I was confident of my topic and I was even more efficient in writing. I was able to narrow down my ideas, and focus on the ideas I wanted to convey. I am anticipating the grade I will receive.

The most memorable event this week, outside of schoolwork, was making pasta in the dorm room. My roommate and I have been experimenting with making microwavable items. So far, we have made mashed potatoes and pasta, thanks to Betty Crocker. The creation of food in the dorm poses quite a challenge: considering the amount of space. We have used any surface area available, which usually means our desks. Even though there is little “cooking” space, there always seems to be a large mess. However, the final product is well worth the special maneuver techniques, and the mess at the end.

Weekly Reflection 11/7-11/11

During this term I have needed to do very little research. However, I have used the Internet as one of my sources. I have used Google as my main search engine to find credible websites. I have used a combination of popular and scholarly Internet sources. For example, I have used Wikipedia.org as scholarly website to gain most of my information. The information is usually unbiased, and will give “two sides” to any issue. Throughout my Internet research, I have found sites that were not useful or credible. Sometimes the website can give misleading or old information. However, one of the main benefits of Internet research is being able to get information fast, and sometimes be able to find different information that would not be in books. In my personal life, I have found the Internet to be very useful. I have used the Internet to buy movie tickets, and to buy college books and other items. Yes, I was raised with the Internet in my home. My family got the Internet when I was in fourth or fifth grade. I did not start using the Internet until I was in middle school. I think the Internet is a great tool for communication, research and entertainment.

This week I had a few stressful moments with classroom work. I felt as though I was struggling with managing everything that was on my “plate.” I had several assignments due all at the same time, and I felt stressed. However, I managed to stay calm enough to get the work done, and feel confident about the quality. Unfortunately, I was so busy that I forgot to print out one of my English assignments, and now I cannot receive credit for the effort I put into the assignment. I realized my mistake today when the teacher gave the graded assignments back to the class. Only one of my response papers was given back to me, and I came to the conclusion that I somehow forgot to print the other piece. As a perfectionist, I feel frustrated and irritated that about my absentmindedness. Nonetheless, I want to get the best grade possible in my English class. I am always putting the most effort to my assignments, in hopes that I will receive my desired grade. This week I have learned that it is fine to make mistakes, and to always learn from them.

The most positive aspect of my week was going to my grandmother’s house for dinner. My cousin Amy, my roommate and I drove to Granny’s house on Thursday evening. Granny was excited to have us spend some time with her, and to hear what has been happening at school. She cooked a “pre-Thanksgiving” meal for us. There was turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, peas, and muffins. For dessert Granny made pumpkin pie. I felt full after dinner and quite happy. I am so thankful for my Granny, who lives close by and is willing to cook. I also have a deep admiration for my grandma. She is a very social lady, and believes that life should be lived to its fullest. I hope that when I am older and physically less capable, that I will embrace life like my grandma.

HiYa?

Hi! I'm Angela Rasmussen.

A Little About Me

I am currently in my second term of Western's Ed Program. My endorsement area is Elementary/Middle with an endorsement in math and health. I am really excited to be graduating in June and starting my career as a teacher. My life is CRAZY outside of school. I am still considered a newlywed; having been married Dec. 11th 2004. Married life is AWESEOME!! However, I would not recommend getting married the day after finals to anyone, it was stressful. I had the oppertunity to spend 6 months (two summers) in New York nannying for two wonderful little boys. They are the true joy of my life. Living in New York is such an eye opening experience that I would recommend it to anyone that has the oppertunity.

1. Consider your high school experiences: where are you now, as a student, learner and participant in extracurricular and social activities?

As a student I am more focused than I ever was in high school. I have decreased significantly in participating in extracurricular activites. As a high school student I always knew what was going on and I was on the cheerleading squad for four years.

2. What are your strengths and biggest challenges in all three areas?

My biggest challenges are that I am not motivated to be involved in school activites and procrastinating, although I have gotten better at not procrastinating as much. My strengths are that I am more focused on my studies and I study a lot more for exams.

3. What changes would you like to make by the end of the fall term?

I would definitely like to be more involved. Being involved while going to school makes it a better experience. I would also like to get better grades this year then I ever have.

4. What are the steps that will assist you in making these changes?

The steps that would help assist me in making these changes is to ask what I can do around the school to get involved. To gain more knowledge and know what my options are. Also I will look over my notes taken that day for each class to make sure I understand everything that is going on.

Weekly Reflection:

A. Looking back on the past week, which classroom activity or coursework was the most memorable, significant or consequential? Please explain.

Watching fellow classmates act out a scene from the play Oedipus in my English class was most significant this past week. This was significant because it was an important scene in the play that helped me understand what was going on better. Having a better understanding of the play is going to help me write a better paper for next week.

B. List activities you were engaged in this week. Identify the most memorable, significant, or consequential experience and explain why.

I do not live on campus and I do not have a job, so I spend most of my time on schoolwork. My most consequential experience is that I am not involved enough with the school. With not living on campus, and this being my first year, I believe I am missing out on meeting new people and getting involved. I am thinking that next year I might live on campus, so I can meet more people, and get involved.

-- AnnEvans - 14 Oct 2005

A. My most memorable classroom experience last week was Freshman Academy. This class was most memorable to me because I learned a lot of useful information about the school. Considering I don't live on campus I received "The Code of Responsibility." Which may come in handy as the year goes on. I was also informed about becoming a Resident Hall Assistant for next year, and all the benefits that go along with it.

B. An activity I was invoved with this week, was creating a study group for one of my classes. This was beneficial because we were able to divide what we needed to know amongst eachother, and gain knowledge for our mid-term tomorrow. This was significant because everyone had to do their share, it saved a lot of time, and hopefully with the knowledge we have gained, we will all pass our tests with excellent scores.

-- AnnEvans - 24 Oct 2005

1. Looking back on the past week, which classroom activity or coursework was the most memorable, significant, or consequential?

- Looking back on the past week my most significant experience was studying for my Philosophy mid-term. This was significant because I had to study, and like always I procrastinate. I decided to wait until the night before to start studying. I happened to do good on the test, but if I had started studying earlier I could have done better, and not felt so rushed.

2. List activities you were engaged in this week. Identify the most memorable, significant or consequential experience and explain why.

- This week we decided to host a halloween get together, which happened to be very consequential. It was fun until we found out that someone had stolen a laptop, and our floors were covered in mud. This is definitely an experience I hope to never encounter again. From this experience I now know to not host anything ever again.

-- AnnEvans - 29 Oct 2005

1. Looking back on the past week, which classroom activity or coursework was the most memorable, significant, or consequential.

The most significant and memorable classroom activity was in my Social Science class. In this class I had learned that 50% of the population will get cancer, coorporations last year only paid $10 for taxes, and tuition has gone up 90% in the past six years. All of these statistics kept me interested and it was very knowledgeable.

2. List activities you were engaged in this week. Identify the most memorable, significant, or consequential experience and why.

My most memorable activity I was involved in this week was going to Midnight Madness with my roommates. My roommates had been telling me it was really cool so I was really excited. When actually it was really lame. You couldn't even understand what the guy was trying to say into the microphone. Now I know not to go next year.

-- AnnEvans - 03 Nov 2005

What type of internet research have you done this term?

I have done a lot of internet research this term. I have researched the internet for all of my classes. I mainly research for papers to get information.

What are the major benefits and problems with internet for personal use?

I use the internet a lot for my personal use. I communicate this way, do my banking and I have my own webpage I look at every day. The problems I see with using the internet for my personal use is that I never know who can look at my information.

Were you raised with the internet in your home?

Most of my life I was brought up with the internet. I couldn't imagine life without it.

B. What was the most significant, memorable or consequential activity this week? Why?

My most consequential activity this week was going snowboarding. I love snowboarding but I happened to crash and brake two of my fingers. With two broken fingers it makes it very difficult to type, and I have a lot of papers due these upcoming weeks.

-- AnnEvans - 14 Nov 2005

My most consequential part of class this last week was my Decolonization paper for Social Science. It was a five page paper. I decided not to start on it until the night before it was due and our internet at my house was shut off. I had to go to the computer lab at school and type my paper. When I got my paper back my teacher asked me to re-write it. I hope I will learn not to procrastinate so much soon.

My most memorable activity outside of school was Thanksgiving. It was great to be able to spend it with my family. The only part that I didn't like was having to go to work after I ate.

Personal Growth Statement

I feel that I am an average student. I do not possess any outstanding strengths in subjects such as math, science, reading or writing. I am, and always will be, absolutely terrible at math and science. On the other hand, I’m not too bad at reading and writing. So, my goal remains the same and that is to do my best given my current abilities. I find that I am more eager to learn being that I am paying for my education. In my opinion, there is more pending on my current studies than my high school studies. One day, I will use the knowledge I am currently attaining in a career. If I blow off my studies now, I will do a poorly in my future career. That said, I am trying to learn as much as I can. Participating in school activities is the furthest thing on my mind. In my opinion, building relationships and holding onto my current friendships is far more important than any club I could join at Western. Clubs and sports just aren’t a priority for me at this time. However, I do enjoy social activities. I love people, and I hope to make many, many friends at Western. As a student, I struggle to prioritize my time and set aside time for homework. At the same time, I try not to turn in sloppy work. I’m not sure what you could consider a weakness as far as being a learner is concerned. I feel that I am eager to increase my knowledge of the world, the people in it, and how things work. I guess the fact that I have no desire to join any clubs or sports is a weakness in itself. I do, however, have a strong desire to know people and make friends. So, that’s a strength. As far as changes go, I would like to know more, prioritize my time better, and have several friends. To reach these goals, I could apply myself in my studies, make a schedule and stick to it, and attend social activities. All things considered, I’d say I’m not doing too shabby for myself.

Weekly reflection for the week of 10/09/05 through 10/15/05

Part A:

This week I was given the opportunity to write a play in Professor DeChatelet?’s cultural/capitalism class. This task seemed daunting at first, but I soon found it to be very stretching in the most excellent way. Writing a play, I discovered is much more challenging than writing a descriptive, persuasive or informative paper. In writing a play, you can’t describe to the audience what the characters are feeling or thinking. It has to be seen. This exercise stretched my writing skills, and I feel that I have benefited exceedingly because of it.

Part B:

Honestly, the most memorable experience for this week can’t really be classified or contained in one specific moment. This week I built upon my existing and emerging friendships around campus, and I was given several opportunities to interact with my peers outside of the classroom setting. Coming from a small high school, the idea of getting to know anyone at Western seemed above me. However, this week changed that opinion and was altogether encouraging. The only other significant activity that occurred this week was work. I spent a considerably number of hours working at Mervyns in Salem.

-- AnnalissaCahan - 15 Oct 2005

A. This week my most memorable classroom experience definitely occurred in my art class. I learned that professors can be far different than high school teachers and to be honest, they can be down right wretched. For my art midterm we were required to have a ten-minute meeting with our teacher during which she would assess our work and give us our current grade. Well, much to my surprise, my professor unleashed some not-so-nice opinions of me. I know that this doesn’t qualify as a project or assignment, but I did learn a lot from this experience. Although unpleasant, it will help me in my future classes. B. This week brought a first time experience into my life. I went to a bar. No, I didn’t indulge in alcoholic drinks. I simply went to hear a friend of mine play his guitar and sing. Personally, I would much rather go to a coffee shop than a bar. Upon entering the Moonbaker, I discovered several mullets. This was an odd finding, because I always pictured bars being filled with droves of beautiful young people. At any rate, it was a fairly pleasant experience, one that I will always remember.

Art Word

A how-to: Make your words stand out!

The Basics

As seen in various other Twiki pages: ATasteOfTWiki?, TextFormattingRules?, TwikiShorthand?, and WikiSyntax?

There are many things you can do to help your words stand out. The very basics consist of italics, bold, and bold italics. ArtWord will walk you through using these three things as well as adding color and other effects.

Italics

Italics can be simple to use. Simply put an underscore in front of and behind the text you wish to italicize.

Example: 'My grandma is the greatest.' is really typed as 'My grandma is the _greatest_.'

If you choose to italicize a whole sentence, you just put the underscores outside the words. For example: 'I love icecream!' is really typed _'I love icecream!'_

Note: There are no additional spaces when using italics! If you place a space before and after the underscore, your italicized text will have an extra space between it and the words surrounding it.

Bold

Bold works very much the same way as Italics. The main difference is you use an asterick (*) instead of an underscore (_). You still need to put one before and one after the text you wish to show up bold.

Example: 'My grandma is the greatest.' is really typed as 'My grandma is the *greatest*.'

If you choose to bold an entire sentence, you just put the astericks outside all the words. For example: 'I love icecream!' is really typed *'I love icecream!'*

Note: There are no additional spaces when using bold!

Bold & Italic

There are two ways to both bold and italicize text. As in life, there is an easy way, and a hard way. First, we shall take a look at the easy way. The easy way is much like adding italics to a word or phrase, though you use two underscores (no space!).

My grandma is the greatest. is really typed My grandma is the __greatest__.

If you choose to italicize and bold a whole sentence, you just put the underscores outside the words. For example: I love icecream! is really typed __I love icecream!__

Note: There are no additional spaces when using italics! (Text[space]text[space][underscore][underscore]text[underscore][underscore][space]text.) vs (Text[space]text[space]text[space]text.)

Now the hard way: You use both the asterick and the underscore, but you have to use them in the correct order. By using an asterick followed by an underscore preceding the text and an underscore followed by an asterick after the text you are able to receive the bold italic results. However, if you confuse the order and use underscore, asterick, text, asterick, underscore you will simply have italic text surrounded by underscores as a result.

Examples:

This works. is really *_This works._*

*This doesn't work.* is really _*This doesn't work.*_

*_This also doesn't work.*_

_*Neither does this._*

Colors

There are many colors to choose from, that may very well be the most difficult decision to make when zesting up your wiki page. There are the basic red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

Now here is how to use them:

My favorite color is gray. is really typed My favorite color is % GRAY % gray % ENDCOLOR % . (WITHOUT SPACES)

This particular code is very specific. The name of the color (in this case, GRAY) and the 'ENDCOLOR' must be in CAPITOLS. And between the % symbol and COLOR or ENDCOLOR there should be NO SPACES!

Here is another example:

Orange is a fun summer color. Is really % ORANGE % Orange is a fun summer color. % ENDCOLOR % (WITHOUT SPACES, and the code in caps.)

To make things really colorful (but very complicated) one can change the color of each letter. It will look like a long string of text for each word, as no additional spaces should be present. There will be a % COLOR % in front of each letter and a % ENDCOLOR % after each. (% RED %h% ENDCOLOR %% BLUE %e% ENDCOLOR %% ORANGE %l% ENDCOLOR %% YELLOW %l%ENDCOLOR %% GRAY %o% ENDCOLOR %. --Once more, no spaces. Will look like: hello)

Tables

Tables are used by adding a vertical line (generally above the key on the keyboard) between words or phrases.

Effect Example Code
Italic Marshmallow _Marshmallow_
Bold Marshmallow *Marshamallow*
Bold&Italic Marshmallow __Marshmallow__ or *_Marshmallow_*

In case you were wondering...

My name is Ashley. I have a BA in history, with a French minor, from Western. I'm pursuing my masters in education (well, looking for grad schools) while working as a Writing Center Fellow. I live in Dallas, which is awesome only because it has a drive-in movie theater that plays double features. My preferred music genre is alternative, but I listen to anything and everything--pop, country, jazz, classical, even musicals. During the week I am a mild-mannered nerd who likes to read, play video games, and watch cartoons. On weekends I become a wild child and go sailing, snowboarding, kayaking, and backpacking--but usually not all at once.

Contact Info

My WOU email is asbell@wou.edu. I check it at least once a day--as should you! If you're hoping for a more immediate response, try a_neonta@hotmail.com. If that's not enough, my AIM screen name is ANeonta. If you need to see me in person, I work at the front desk in the advising and learning center--it's just upsairs from the writing center, so drop by sometime.

I read an article from the October 3 edition of the New York Times. The article title was "Ambitious Experiment Leads Kosovo to a Crossroads"

Summary: The story talks about the forging of a democracy between the Albanian Majority and the Serbian minority and the problems that they are encountering.

How I feel: After reading this article, my heart goes out to these people. They are trying to do something that we take for granted everyday and they have so much stacked against them in the first place. Like the article said, to first glance this area looks like it is thriving but under the surface things are very unstable. I believe democracy is something that you cannot fake and that has to start with the underneath surface. I cannot imagine living in a world that if full of such hostility and uncertainty. I wish them the best of luck but do I think that democracy will happen overnight or do I tihnk that democracy is where they need to start. Economy - that is where I would start. People aren't going to be willing to sarafice when they have nothing to sacrafice.

1) Looking back on my high school career, I can’t help but smile and pat myself on the back. As a student I was able to ended with a 3.68 cumulative grade point average. I was on the honor roll for six consecutive years, including junior high. I was in good standing with all of my teachers and had little difficulty meeting the requirements of each class. I think I took a very active role in my education (e.g., asking questions in class, talking with the teachers if extra help was needed after class, taking notes during lectures, and completing my assignments to the best of my ability.) Looking back on my extracurricular activities, I wonder how I managed to do them all and still graduate in the top ten percent of my class. My senior year I was involved with seven extracurricular activities and held office positions in all of them not to mention winning quiet a few awards. I am most proud of being elected student body president and winning a national championship in the Business Professionals of American program. I was nominated captain of my speech team and received the “Best Actress” award in our school play. However, looking back I realize that more important to me was not the awards or offices I held but the amazing relationships I formed with the people I got to meet.

2) First my strengths: I love school, so going, participating and striving to do my best was never a difficult thing for me. I would consider that my strength. My weakness in my academics would have to be how much I procrastinate. I am usually the girl up late the night before a big paper is due typing away franticly at the keyboard - I do have to admit that some of my best work has come out of the cram sessions. Extracurricular wise: I would have to say that I am an excellent team player -which is very odd because I never learned how to do it in sports . I think a project is successful if everyone in the group feels like they contributed to all the positive comments the project received. My weakness is that I tend to be stubborn and I strive for perfection, but I am getting better on allowing the little things to slip.

3) I would like to have as wide of a friend base here as I did at home. Surrounding myself with people that inspire and motivate me is very important. I am from Montana so I don’t know very many people from here and my goal is to gradually increase my new friend base as time goes on.

4) I plan to extend my friendship network by becoming actively involved in a wide range of activities on campus. I don’t feel like I need to have super bonds with everyone, I just want to have someone to say hi to on the way to class in the morning or watch movies with on the weekend.

It has been an amazing past week. I am finally moving past the new student gitters and am finally starting to really experience the college life.

I had an interesting experience this week in my WR 135 class. We have been writing research papers. Originally, I thought I had chosen a topic that meant a lot to me. However, over the course of the weekend, I had a few things happen to me that changed my perspective on what was important to me. Instead, I chose to write my paper about the experience and how it relates to the big picture of my life. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Outside the classroom I had a similar experience. I wrote an article for the Western Oregon Journal about Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It was an amazing feeling to open up the paper and see my story there in the newspaper. I wrote for my high school newspaper, but those articles had never seemed as great of an achievement. I know that most people will never put my face with that article, but all that matters to me is that I became involved on campus and loved the end results.

I had an amazing experience linking my personal life and my relationship with my peers to my Writing 135 class. In Writing 135, we are working on papers about issues that are important to us. I chose a topic I am very passionate about. Friday came around and I am sitting in HUM 199. Everyone went around the room and shared about where their papers were at. After hearing all of my classmates talk so passionately about their topics and it made me realize that these people are living proof of what I am writing about in my paper - people who live life to the fullest. I sat there with a dozen or so other people and they are not only saying they are passionate about something but they are taking the next step - they are acting on their passions. I am even more excited now to continue writing my paper and to give them the opportunity to read it when I am finished - hopefully, I will do them justice.

This past week, I went to my regular Student Activities Board meeting. I also went to a speech club meeting and a M.E.Ch.A meeting. I really loved all of them. I do have to admit though that the M.E.Ch.A meeting was awkward. I was one of the handful of non-Latino people in the room. It wasn't awkward because I am racist, prejudice, or anything like that. Nor was it because they were unwelcoming to me. The only thing I can think that made it awkward was that it was a new experience for me. I was born and raised in Montana, a place with very little cultural variation. It was something I wasn't used to. However, I do believe I will be going back next week. The people there are amazing and so full of life.

I had somewhat of a short academic week this past week. I had to fly home to Montana for my Grandma's funeral. However, before I left I had the pleasure to take my first college midterm exam. That was an experience in itself. The professor allowed us to use a hour and fifty minutes to complete the test. I never thought a test could take that long but I ended up using all but fifteen minutes of the time we were allowed. I feel like I did really well on the test but it was nothing like the tests we took in high school. I loved that it was in essay form though. I felt that because it was in essay form it was a better evaluation of what I had learned. Outside of the classroom, nothing too exciting happened. I did take the initiative to coordinate the elementary school coloring contest that is being sponsored by the Student Activities Board. This was a big step for me. This is my first big leadership role that I have taken since high school. I see this as my opportunity to prove to people that I am responsible and capable of completing projects successfully. I am really looking forward to it!

I had a very frustrating experience in my English 105 class this week. Our first paper was due and I was really excited to turn mine in because I had worked really hard on it. I had revised my paper three times and had even taken it to the writing center. Needless to say, when my paper was handed back with a “B” at the top of it, I was more than disappointed. I was disappointed with the grade, but I was more disappointed with what wasn't on the paper. It was completely blank. How am I supposed to improve on something when I don’t know what I did wrong? I made an appointment to meet with my professor so that we can discuss it and what I did wrong. We only have one other paper for this class and I really don’t want to make the same mistakes on that one as I did on this paper.

However, I did have a very rewarding experience during a speech club meeting. I am the secretary of the speech club this year and the officers wanted to meet and talk about what we (the club) would like to do this year. The president and vice president of the club are seniors in the speech communications major. Throughout the meeting, I had the opportunity to ask them questions about the major, the professors and how they plan to use this major after they graduate. It was really interesting and very helpful. I have been very confused about a lot of things regarding my major and what classes I should be taking. The girls were so helpful. I am really excited to know that I have someone to go to if I need help or have questions about my classes. -- AshleyErb - 07 Nov 2005

Wow! What an exhausting week it has been. My WR 135 class has finally begun the last stages of completing our final research paper. I am excited in a way and yet, I am sad it will be all over with. I struggled this past week to find the final component to my paper - someone to interview. My problem was that I didn't want to interview someone who was too commercialized (e.g., Dr. Phil, Martha Stewart) or just some random person. However, while I was looking through my email address book, I found the perfect person - Mark Wandle. Mr. Wandle was my eighth grade history teacher and a huge role model for me during high school, but someone who I wasn't too terribly close to. I conducted the interview via email and I couldn't be more please with his response's and I cannot wait to use them in my paper.

This past weekend, I attended the ASWOU leadership retreat. I have very mixed feelings about the retreat as a whole (most of the them on the negative side) but I do feel that the retreat helped further bond the members of the Student Activities Board. However, one of the positive parts of the trip was the ropes course. I had been dreading this all weekend, but I made myself do it and I am really glad I did. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to hoist me up onto their shoulders (I am not the skinniest person in the world) so that I could reach up, grab the hands of two people at the top of a twelve foot wall and help pull myself the rest of the way over the wall. It was one of the most amazing experiences in my life and I am so glad that I did it. It made me prove to myself that I can do things I am not comfortable with and that trusting people is sometimes the only way you can get from where you are to where you need to be. -- AshleyErb - 14 Nov 2005

I didn't know where to post the additional weekly reflection statement about the internet that we had to do, so I am posting it below this one.

Part A: 1) Most of the research I have done this term has been centered around my WE 125 research class. In conducting research for that class, I have used the “regular” sources of information (e.g., books, magazines, the world wide web, and journals) but I was also introduced to a whole new world of research opportunities - online databases. I have been using the databases offered by Hamersley Library and the information I have found through them has helped immensely with my research. 2) The biggest benefit I have found when using the internet is simply, its convenience. I can conduct research from the comfort of my dorm room, from the Werner University Center or in my favorite computer lab in the library. However, there are two major drawbacks to the Internet. First of all, most of the websites out there lack credibility and secondly, it can take awhile, when using a search engine, to find a web page that really relates to the topic at hand. Part B: 1) Yes, I have used the internet for my personal research, probably on a weekly basis if not a daily one. Just the other day I was searching for air plane tickets so that I can fly home for Christmas. Also, I am from Montana, so MapQuest? has become a favorite website for me. I am always using it when I have to go somewhere new. MapQuest? has been a lifesaver for me. 2) We did not get the internet in my household until I was probably a freshmen in high school. My dad didn’t see a point in it and now that I have opened his eyes to the endless possibilities it has I cannot see him ever getting rid of it. My family especially likes having it now. It is a huge venue for us to be able to communicate with each other. I am constantly sending my family email messages informing them that school is going great.

A topic that interests me is music censorship.

This topic was easy to find information on. However, most of it was information that was in agreeance with the negative effects of music censorship and most of the information was opinion based not statistical information. It was harder to find information that supported the censorship of music and then again most of that was opinion based information. This was a topic that was easy to “Google” and find information. The Hamersley Library online databases offered a lot of information. This topics often finds its way into newspaper articles and magazines so finding sources other than books and internet websites was not a problem. I really enjoyed exploring the few internet sites that I did and reading some of the newspaper articles.

I believe censorship of music should not occur and after reading the opinions of artists whose music has been banned only fueled my belief. I did find a music censorship advocate who made some good points in his arguments. His arguments made me think about the topic more in-depth. I can see his side and understand where he is coming from, but it frustrated me that he didn’t attempt to see the other point of view. I think he lost some of his credibility by doing this. I hope to further my research in this topic someday, maybe in one of my future research papers. I think this topic would provide for some very interesting interview possibilities.

I gave my final speech of the term for my Speech 111 class. It was persuasive and I think I did really well on it, but was a speech by one of my fellow classmates that really impacted me. She did her speech on anorexia and how it is becoming the new normal. I had heard all of the facts before but for some reason because it was one of my peers, someone my age, someone who is going through the same things I am, I paid more attention to what she was saying. Throughout the speech, I was thinking to myself that I have never known anyone who is suffering from anorexia. At the end of her speech, she told us that she has suffered and is still trying to recover from anorexia. My mouth hit the floor. She seemed so perfect and I would have never imagined someone like her have to fight against such a terrible disease. I didn’t feel bad for her, but I respected her more for it. It made me realize that just because someone looks okay on the outside doesn’t mean they are on the inside. The speech gave me a new sense of awareness for something I hadn’t given much thought to before.

I was able to view Western Oregon University’s showing of The Serpent: A Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Rice Auditorium. It was an amazing performance and I am still find myself reflecting on it. I was involved with theatre production in high school, but never once had I been to be a performance like this or with such explicit topics or scenes. It made me realize that this wasn’t high school anymore. There isn’t someone watching over me censoring me from things that may make me uncomfortable. No topic is taboo. There were times during this play that made me uncomfortable, but eventually I got over it and really enjoyed it. It was important for me to see this play, not only because it was so well done, but because it really made me think about all of the things I am going to get to and already have experienced so far during my college career.

As I have seen in the past couple of week's high school is a lot easier than college. For one, in high school I knew everyone in my class. I could socialize with everyone in my class and see them every day. I have gone to school with almost all of these people. From kindergarten all the way through high school, I've got to know each and everyone of them.

In college I find it hard for myself to actually interact with anyone besides my roommate. I have always been the shy quiet type and I don't think that any of that will change any time soon. As a student at Western Oregon University I am just like any other student. I am here to learn what I have to learn so I can get on with my life happily. As a learner I would say I am a very slow learner. I am also a very visual learner, and if I don't have any kind of hands on projects I won't learn anything. What is helping me is what some people were saying at a presentation (for freshman academy). They said that if you are a very visual person you should try chewing gum or squeezing a stress ball.

In high school I was a very active student. I participated in numerous things, such as cheerleading, NHS, FBLA, FCCLA, and many more clubs. I have also tried every sport my high school had to offer. Now being in college I feel this is a time for me to study and focus on what I want out of my future. I don't really see what clubs or sports would have to contribute to my studies.

By the end of this fall term I am just looking forward to more experiences the college has to offer. Experiences meaning different types of classes, since we are required to take LACC I will be forced to go outside of my comfort zone and experience something new. The steps I will be taking is just making different kinds of choices for classes.

A.Classroom Experiences and Coursework

Looking back on the past week I would have to say WOW! This isn’t anything like high school. I never would’ve taught I would be saying this, but I kind of miss high school. In college they expect you to do everything on your own unlike high school. My most memorable moment so far would be my Into to Theatre class. My Professor is just full of excitement and he actually wants you to learn about theatre. He doesn’t care if you like it or not, but he wants you to understand what theatre is all about.

B.Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement

I haven’t been apart of any activities. I go home on the weekends and don’t have any time to go to any or them. I also have classes to go to. By the time I get out of them I am too tired to do anything. I am not to sure how I could get involved, but I am sure my roommate will drag me to one of them one of these days.

A. Classroom Experiences and Coursework

Over the past week, of week 3 I have had a lot of studying to do. Between having Biology class and Chemistry class I have had no time for anything else, I barely have time to sleep. Now that I look at my classes, I wish I had picked classes that were a lot easier. Nothing memorable has happened this week. I will wait to see what next week has in store for me.

B. Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement

I still haven't been involved with any activities this past week. I still go home to visit my boyfriend and my family. This is the first time moving away from home, and it is a little hard for me to handle. When my boyfriend decides to come on up and see me I might have to go to an activity.

-- AshleyMataya - 31 Oct 2005

A. Classroom Experiences and Coursework

I have noticed that you actually have to study to get anywhere in college. I am used to the laid back teachers in high school. I do like my classes, however they are tuff. I am trying to get into the whole I am here in college pick it up a notch, but it hasn't hit me yet. I just had a big mid-term in my American Popular Music Class and I thought it was really easy, we'll see how that went in a week. Other than that, I just have to really focus on my science classes and do what I have to do to pass them. If not I will be taking them again next term.

B. Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement

There hasn't been anything new, I am still doing the same things I have been doing for the past 4 weeks. I guess you could say I am a very lazy person and I just like to hang around and do nothing. If I am not just hanging out doing nothing I am sleeping. I believe this is how it is going to be for the rest of this term and maybe year.

-- AshleyMataya - 07 Oct 2005

A.Classroom Experiences and Coursework

Not too much has happened in the first week of school. I think it is just the warm up week and things will pick up soon. My teachers seem nice and friendly, except one. My American Popular Music Teacher, it is his first year teaching this and he is doing a HORRIBLE job. He does things in a fast pace that no one can keep up with. It is kind of annoying at times because he will put up notes and not let you have enough time to write them down. When people get mad he says oh just go look it up in your book. To me this is VERY ANNOYING!

B. Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement

So far so good about the campus, I have found all of my classes thankfully to my roommate. I don't really care for all the walking, but I am sure I will do just fine when I get used to it. One thing that I am very pleased about is my roommate is very friendly and is extremely nice. Things can only get better.

-- AshleyMataya - 07 Nov 2005

A.Classroom Experiences and Coursework

I find classes getting harder as the term is passing by. If only I knew this before I started college. I've had lots of BIG tests this past week. Let me tell you they aren't easy at all. You study really hard and stay up late just doesn't work. You actually have to comprehend what the professor is saying and memorize it.

B. Campus Life, Off Campus Activities and Civic Engagement

Like usual I am not doing any activities, they just don't seem like fun. Right now I am missing home and feel like I just need to go back. It would be easier for me to learn if I was at home and happy. Being up here 2 and a half hours away from all my loved ones isn't helping me any. I only think about going home every weekend and not coming back. I guess that things with my roommate aren't helping the matter. I don't want to stay in my dorm any more. This whole experience isn't really what I want

Attaching Files

One of the benefits of using Wiki is attaching Files. They can be pictures, documents etc. For this example I will attach an image of driving instructions to the campus. To do this, simply scroll down to Attach image or Document which is towards the bottom of this page. From there, you will be prompted to locate that file by clicking browse, then simply find the image or document and click next.

Note that there are 2 ways of showing the acutual picture. If you click on the box that says Link, the image will appear along with the text you write, if the box is unchecked, there will be a link created to the image.

Here is an example of the Campus Map when I clicked on the Link box which will display it here:

  • Driving Instructions:

Also note, that just down below, you can see the link to the image if you do not wish to show it along with the text. -- ChristianMendez - 19 Jul 2005

Avatar

cb232978f6e06661.gif

Definition:

Avatar is an icon or symbol that people use to represent or identify themselves on the internet or in the virtual community. It can also refer to the characteristic related with the screen name or internet user.

Origin

The "avatar" derives from the Sanskrit word Avatāra, meaning "incarnation" and usually implying a deliberate descent into mortal realms for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hindu texts. For example, Krishna is the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu the Preserver, whom many Hindus worship as God. The Dasavatara are ten particular "great" incarnations of Vishnu.("Avatar (icon)." Wikipedia. Febuary 15,2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_%28icon%29)

Avatar in our lives

As time goes by, Avatar has become the icon that can repesent user themselves. Name in the form of text has no longer been attractive anymore. People now would like to use things as cool as possilbe to stand for themselves. Pictures, no matter from users themselves or animie ones can give the general idea of users' characteristics. Some websites even offer all kinds of decoractions or orgament stuffs for people to use on their avatars so that it can look cool or beautiful and at the same time, vendors can charge the money. It seems that in virtual community now, people would rather use avatars to represent themselves than showing their real face.

There are some positions that users can use avatar

Forums

Despite the widespread use of avatars, it is unknown which Internet forums were the first to use them; the earliest forums did not include avatars as a default feature, and they were included in unofficial "hacks" before eventually being made standard. Avatars on Internet forums serve the purpose of representing users and their actions, personalizing their contributions to the forum, and may represent different parts of their persona or social status in the forum.

The traditional avatar system used on most Internet forums is a small (96x96 pixels, for example) square-shaped area close to the user's forum post, where the avatar is placed. Some forums allow the user to upload an avatar image that may have been designed by the user or acquired from elsewhere. Other forums allow the user to select an avatar from a preset list or use an auto-discovery algorithm to extract one from the user's homepage. Some avatars are animated. This avatar is an example of a four-image avatar. Some avatars are animated. This avatar is an example of a four-image avatar.

Other avatar systems exist, such as on Gaia Online, where a pixelized representation of a person or creature is used, which can then be customized to the user's wishes.(Wikipedia)

Games

social softwares

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) was the first popular instant-messaging program to use avatars, picking up on the idea from PC games. However, users of AIM commonly refer to avatars as buddy icons. Today, many popular instant-messaging clients use avatars, including Trillian, Gaim, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger.

Instant messaging avatars are usually very small. AIM icons are 48x48 pixels, although many icons can be found online that measure 50x50 pixels.

The latest use of avatars in instant messaging is dominated by dynamic avatars. The user choose an avatar that represent him while chatting and the use of a text to speech technology, enable the avatar to talk the texts being used at the chat window. One of the pioneers on that form of avatars is Gizmoz.com. Another form of use for these kind of avatars is for video chats/calls. Skype has featured on her latest release (3.0) the option to use talking avatars while making video calls, two companies are doing that on Skype - Gizmozand Crazytalk and they offer a new way of self expression over IM experience.

AIM buddy icons have been used as an experimental form of viral marketing by some advertising firms.

As a student, right now, I am experimenting with new ways to accomplish homework and have fun at the same time. When I was in high school I didn’t have a whole lot of homework, or either it was really hard or there was a long period between the actual assignment and due date. In high school I was a big procrastinator. One of my biggest strengths as a student is that I am eager to learn and can keep an open mind about most subjects. As far as challenges go, I am very good at managing my assignments in such a way that they all get done on time. By the end of fall term I would like to be good at keeping up in all my classes and being prepared for anything. Some steps that I can take to accomplish this goal is to set aside study time where I wont be watching TV, listening to anything, or talking to anyone. As a learner, right now, I am trying to find out whether I am a fast and easy learner or a slow and hard learner. In high school I was a fast learner and things came easy to me. Then my focus was in all four of the basic education groups. Now my focus is on science, which I am not good at. One of my biggest weaknesses is that when I don’t get something sometimes I wont try very hard to get it if I’ve already done everything I can think of to understand it. By the end of fall term I would like to be persistent in understanding subjects that aren’t so easy to me. One way I can accomplish this is to ask for help from anyone who might know. As a participant in extracurricular and social activities, right now, I am not so much a participant. In high school I was involved with many activities such as orchestra and swimming, but now I’m only involved with work. A strength that I have in this area is that I can be very funny in social situations and I love to exercise. One of my biggest weaknesses is that I am terribly shy, and am not very good at carrying on conversations. One step I can take to conquer this is to throw myself into situations where I have to be social. As for extracurricular activities I am very satisfied with what I’m involved in.

-- BetsyMcDonald - 09 Oct 2005 hi, i'm reflecting. on what i don't know. so here's some reflections of last week in the funny stuff: * First of all, if you would like to know the meaning of funny, here is the address: http://www.answers.com/funny&r=67 *If love is blind and marriage is an institution, does that mean that marriage is an institution for the blind? *What do the manufacturers of styrofoam pack their shipments in? *Is it ok for vegetarians to eat animal crackers? *If wool shrinks in water...why don't sheep shrink in the rain? *If you want to become a vegetatian,is it ok to give up meat cold turkey? here's only a few of wonderfully funny things at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Woods/7822/laff.html
Growth Statement

(1) In my high school career I did not do as much as I would have wanted too. I would have liked to get more involved. But as for grade wise I feel that I really did my best and took classes that I enjoyed and did well in them. So far I feel as though I have not done as much stuff as I said I would. I have not really gotten out of my dorm to much. Class wise I feel as though I should be doing more class work.

(2) My strengths are that I am a fast learner and I do not give up that easily. But my weaknesses are that I am not a very outgoing person. I really do want to go out and do stuff to get involved but I’m really not the kind of person to do that unless I’m forced.

(3) I would really like do try not to procrastinate with my school work and get into some sort of activity that I enjoy. One that will help me to meet new people and do more stuff.

(4) Some steps that I am going to do to help me make my changes would be to manage my time so much better and come out of my shell a little. Do stuff I usually would not do and try and find something fun and exciting to do.

A. Many of my classes had material that was repeated in more then one class. Then again most of my classes are connected in what we are reading or studying right now. The reacquiring theme of what is morally right or wrong continues to come up. The connection between the classes really helped me to see some things in another way that maybe I would not have seen if I was just learning about the subject in one class. It connects easier when you here it talked about in some other way.

B. This week I helped to design our dorm sweatshirt. It was really fun to get together with the other people in my community and see what their ideas were. Other then that I really didn’t have very many other activities that I participated in.

Blackberry

The Blackberry is a wireless machine used by people to communicate with each other (i.e. email) anytime, anywhere. Developed by a Canadian company called Research In Motion (RIM), the Blackberry delivers information over wireless data networks via mobile phone service companies. Like advertised, this four-in-one mobile technology offers the freedom, connectivity and services of a phone, email device, web browser and organizer. All Blackberry models offer an intuitive menu system, familiar QWERTY-style keyboard, and easy-to-read displays which make it an essential stay-in-touch communication tool.

You can see the Blackberry 7250 in the pictures below. This model offered tethering capability, allowing connection of the Blackberry to a laptop for use as a high speed internet connection. From the wikipedia webside, we can know so many things about Blacakberry's information which is completed and useful. link to wikipedia

Though, blackberry has so many strongpoint but it also exsists problems. A musculoskeletal disorder has arisen from repeated blackberry use. Dubbed blackberry Thumb, it causes pain and tenderness in the thumbs to a point where people have problems using them, thus minimizing dexterity. And, a non-physical problem is the constant attachment to email. A blog is a journal that is available on the web.Basically, it is tool that we use to exchange our latest news by posting it online. -- MahmoudJastaneiah - 08 Mar 2007

Information:

A blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your visitors can read what's new. Then they comment on it , link to it , email you, or only read it. Since Blogger was launched, almost five years ago, blogs have reshaped the web, impacted politics, shaken up journalism, and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others.

Blog History in Timeline Form:

Like with the start of many things, early bloggers did not have a name for what they were doing. While it took some time for the genre and the name to develop, blogging has been around since the begining of the internet. Below is a history of early blogs in timeline form.

Dawn of Internet Time: Tim Berners-Lee at CERN begins keeping a list of all new sites as they come online.

June 1993: NCSA's oldest archived What's New list of sites.

June 1993: Netscape begins running it's What's New! list of sites.

Jan 1994: Justin Hall launches Justin's Home Page which would become Links from the Underground.

April 1997: Dave Winer launches Scripting News. His company, Userland, will release Frontier, Manila and Radio Userland, all website and blog content software.

Sept 1997 Slashdot launches their news for nerds.

Dec 1997: Jorn Barger coins the term web log. November 1998: Cameron Barrett publishes the first list of blog sites on Camworld.

Early 1999: Peter Merholz coins the term blog after announcing he was going to pronouce web blogs as "wee-blog". This was then shortened to blog.

Early 1999: Brigitte Eaton starts the first portal devoted to blogs with about 50 listings.

July 1999: Metafilter's earliest archives.

July 1999: Pitas launches the first free build your own blog web tool.

August 1999: Pyra releases Blogger which becomes the most popular web based blogging tool to date, and popularizes blogging with mainstream internet users.

One blog created 'every second':

The blogosphere is continuing to grow, with a weblog created every second, according to blog trackers Technorati. In its latest State of the Blogosphere report, it said the number of blogs it was tracking now stood at more than 14.2m blogs, up from 7.8m in March. It suggests, on average, the number of blogs is doubling every five months. Blogs, the homepages of the 21st Century, are free and easy to set up and use. They are popular with people who want to share thoughts online.

To create an entry in your blog, you must first log in, at BLOGADMIN. Once you are in your administrative control page, click Create Entry, under the MAINTAIN YOUR EXISTING BLOG section in the upper left hand corner of the page. To make a basic entry, just type in the entry body, scroll to the bottom of the page, and save. You may notice there are also many other fields you can fill in, but none of them are essential for casual blogging. You are likely to want to title your entry, but this is optional. A title generally just appears on the top of your entry, in a slightly larger font than the rest of your entry.

Growth Statement

After leaving high school and coming to WOU, I feel that as a student I am a little bit below where I should be. During high school I didn’t take work very seriously, and now I have discoverd that i need to focus more on my studies. As a leaner I need to study more for tests, and do things ahead of time instead of waiting until the last possible moment to turn them in. I am not a very active person when it comes to social activities, so that is one area I will be looking forward to growing in over the next few years. I am planning on making my self go to events even if I don’t really feel like it, or if I am tired, so that way I can become a bit more involved around campus.

My strengths as a student and social activities are that I know I need to improve, and am willing to make an effort to do so. As a learner my strong point is that I am eager to learn as much as I can about my major.

My biggest challenge in all 3 areas is actually doing things, whether its homework, studying, or going to some event, actually doing it is the hardest part.

The changes I would like to make by the end of fall term are, to study harder, not procrastinate, and make/start to make new friends.

Steps that will assist me in making these changes are planning out my day, setting aside time for work, and play. After that I must actually follow the plan.

Weekly Reflections #3 Brian Horn A. This week the most memorable experience involving school was studying for my mid-terms. I spent all of Sunday night and Monday morning studying for my criminal justice mid-term, which ended up going fairly well. Then on Monday night I spent about 3 hours studying for my computer science and Intro to fiction midterm, but most of the time was spent studying for computer science. Then on Saturday I spent about 3 hours just looking over my notes one more time just to be sure I still knew everything that I had studied, and so it would hopefully stick with me until Monday and Tuesday of next week.

B. This week I went home once again and didn’t stick around WOU, and I am starting to see a pattern of what happens during the week. When I am at WOU I am having a blast with friends in the dorm and stuff, and when I go home, I end up working, so I think I am going to have to start staying here more often. But so this weekend was again boring as ever as I slaved away at yard work for my parents, trying to keep the grass green and cut and the leaves out of their way.

Weekly Reflections #4 Brian Horn A. This week was by far the most memorable week, except for the first week here, because I got my mid-terms back and did well on all of them. I was really surprised at how well I did in my intro to fiction class, because that is the one class I felt like I did a horrible job during the mid-term. But I was really relieved when I got my test back and I had gotten a B on it, which after high school was like an A++ for me. So I am glad to say that I am done with my first mid-terms.

B. Well since I was done with mid-terms I decided to take a couple days off during the week and just relax and have fun, after classes though. But I went to Salem and visited some friends there and a couple friends from Corvallis came up and to see me. So over all my week has been nothing but a couple classes here and there, and having a good relaxing fun time with friends. When my friends came here we just stayed around the dorm and played games and watched TV, so to me that was defiantly better than going somewhere which I have been doing.

-- StephanieBrewer - 01 Nov 2005

Weekly Reflection #2

A. This week the most memorable class moment was reading 2 short stories in 30 minutes before class and actually understanding what I was reading, and being able to take notes on what I was reading. It was also a valuable experience because I don’t really want to have to read that fast again, because it’s no fun being rushed to complete work. But in the end everything turned out alright, so I’m happy about it, and know that I’m going to have to manage time better to avoid that situation again, which is defiantly not one of my strong points.

B. This week we had a Halo 2 tournament in our dorm, which was really fun, even though my team lost, badly. But it was still fun playing with other people from around the dorms and school. I was planning on going to the football game on Saturday, but on of the guys in my dorm talked me into going to Salem and driving to best buy, to get some speakers and stuff. Which was all fine by me, because I got some X-MAS shopping done for some family and stuff like that. So all in all it was a fun week at WOU.

Global Literacy Discussion

I think the Idea of Iraq transitioning to a democracy is a good idea. I think it’s a good idea because they can kind of form their own thing going on and not bugging the US. It makes them in a way their own individual country, Like the US and Europe for Example. It’s a good Idea for having extra security at the Vote that way if anything breaks out it can be stopped right away and not escalate into something bigger and more dangerous. We’ll see what this does for their Country after October 15th.
